Abraham's death

  • 1. And Abraham took another wife; and his name was Keturah.
  • 2. And she bore him Zinram, Jocshan, Medan, Midian, Jisbak, and Sua.
  • 3. And Jocsan begat Seba and Dedan; and the sons of Dedan were: Assurim, Letusim and Leumim.
  • 4. And the sons of Midian were: Ephah, Epher, Enoch, Abida, and Elda. All these were sons of Keturah.
  • 5. And Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac.
  • 6. But to the children of the concubines that Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts; and, while still alive, he sent them eastward, to the east land.
  • 7. And these are the days of the years of the life of Abraham, who lived one hundred and seventy-five years.
  • 8. And Abraham expired, dying in a good old age, old and full of days; and was gathered to his people.
  • 9. And his sons, Isaac and Ishmael, buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron, son of Zoar, the Hittite, which is opposite Mamre,
  • 10. The field which Abraham had bought from the sons of Heth. There Abraham and Sarah his wife were buried.
  • 11. And it came to pass, after the death of Abraham, that God blessed Isaac his son; and Isaac dwelt by the well of Labe-Roi.

The Children of Ishmael

  • 12. And these are the generations of Ishmael, son of Abraham, which Sarah's servant, the Egyptian, gave to Abraham.
  • 13. And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael was Nebaioth, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
  • 14. Misma, Duma, Massa,
  • 15. Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Nafis and Kedemá.
  • 16. These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns and by their castles; twelve princes according to their tribes.
  • 17. And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, one hundred and thirty and seven years; and he expired and died, and was gathered to his people.
  • 18. And they dwelt from Havilah to Sur, which is in front of Egypt, going to Assyria; and bordered all his brothers.

Jacob and Esau

  • 19. And these are the generations of Isaac, son of Abraham: Abraham begat Isaac.
  • 20. And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan-aram, sister of Laban the Syrian, to wife.
  • 21. And Isaac prayed earnestly to the LORD for his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD heard his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
  • 22. And the children struggled within her; then said: If so, why am I like this? And he went to inquire of the LORD.
  • 23. And the LORD said to her, Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples shall be divided from your bowels, and one people shall be stronger than the other people, and the greatest shall serve the least.
  • 24. And when her days to give birth were fulfilled, behold, twins were in her womb.
  • 25. And the first came out red, and all like a hairy garment; therefore they called his name Esau.
  • 26. Afterward his brother came out, his hand taking hold of Esau's heel; therefore his name was called Jacob; and Isaac was sixty years old when he begat them.
  • 27. And the boys grew up, and Esau was a skilled man in hunting, a man of the field; but Jacob was a simple man, dwelling in tents.
  • 28. And Isaac loved Esau, because hunting was his taste, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
  • 29. And Jacob had cooked a stew; and Esau came from the field, and he was weary.
  • 30. And Esau said to Jacob, Let me, I pray thee, eat of that red stew, for I am weary. That's why it was called Edom.
  • 31. Then Jacob said, Sell me your birthright today.
  • 32. And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point of death; what use is the birthright to me?
  • 33. Then Jacob said, Swear to me today. And he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob.
  • 34. And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils; and he ate, and drank, and arose, and went out; so Esau despised his birthright.
