Isaac and Rebekah

  • 1. And Abraham was old and advanced in age; and the LORD had blessed Abraham in everything.
  • 2. And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of the house, who ruled over all that he had: Put your hand under my thigh,
  • 3. And thou shalt swear by the LORD God of heaven and God of earth, that thou shalt not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell;
  • 4. But thou shalt go to my country and to my kindred, and thou shalt take a wife for my son, for Isaac.
  • 5. The servant said to him, If perhaps the woman will not come with me to this land, shall I then take your son back to the land from which you came out?
  • 6. And Abraham said unto him, Beware that thou bring not my son back thither.
  • 7. The LORD God of heaven, who took me from my father's house and from the land of my kindred, and who spake with me, and who swore, saying, To thy seed will I give this land; he will send his angel before you, that you may take a wife for my son from there.
  • 8. If perhaps the woman does not want to come after you, you will be free from this oath of mine; only do not bring my son back there.
  • 9. Then the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning this matter.
  • 10. And the servant took ten camels, of his master's camels, and departed (for all his master's goods were in his hand); So he arose and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor.
  • 11. And he made the camels kneel outside the city, beside a well of water, in the evening, at the time the women go out to draw water.
  • 12. And he said, O LORD, God of my master Abraham, grant me favor today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.
  • 13. Behold, I am standing by the fountain of water, and the daughters of the men of this city come out to draw water.
  • 14. So be it, that the damsel to whom I say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink, and she shall say, Drink, and I will water thy camels also; this may be the one you appointed for your servant Isaac; and may I know therein that thou hast shown kindness to my lord.
  • 15. And it came to pass, before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, came out with her pitcher on her shoulder.
  • 16. And the damsel was very fair to look at, a virgin, whom no man had known; and she went down to the fountain, filled her pitcher, and went up.
  • 17. Then the servant ran to meet him, and said, Please give me a little water from your pitcher to drink.
  • 18. And she said, Drink, my lord. And he hurried, and let down his pitcher upon his hand, and gave him to drink.
  • 19. And when she had finished giving him a drink, she said, I will also draw for your camels, until they have finished drinking.
  • 20. And he hurried, and emptied his pitcher into the trough, and ran again to the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels.
  • 21. And that man was astonished at her, keeping silent, to know whether the LORD had prospered his journey or not.
  • 22. And it came to pass, when the camels had finished drinking, that the man took a gold pendant of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for his hands, of ten shekels weight of gold,
  • 23. And he said, Whose daughter are you? Tell me, I beg you; Is there a place in your father's house for us to lodge?
  • 24. And she said to him, I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milca, which she gave to Nahor.
  • 25. I said to him further: Is there a place in your father's house for us to land? 26. And she said to him, There is straw and much grass, and also a place to rest.
  • 27. Then the man bowed down and worshiped the LORD.
  • 28. And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not withheld his loving-kindness and his truth from my master; As for me, the LORD led me on the way to the house of my master's brothers.
  • 29. And the damsel ran, and told these things in her mother's house.
  • 30. And Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban; who ran to the man outside the fountain.
  • 31. And it came to pass, when he saw the pendant and the bracelets upon his sister's hands, and heard the words of his sister Rebekah, saying, Thus spake the man to me; went to the man, who was standing by the camels at the well.
  • 32. And he said unto him, Come in, blessed of the LORD; why are you out? for I have already prepared the house, and the place for the camels.
  • 33. And the man went into the house, and untied the camels, and gave straw and grass to the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the feet of the men that were with him.
  • 34. And there was served to him to eat; but he said, I will not eat until I have spoken my words. And he said: Speak.
  • 35. Then he said, I am Abraham's servant.
  • 36. And the LORD hath blessed my lord exceedingly, that he was great, and hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses.
  • 37. And Sarah, my master's wife, in her old age bare my master a son, and has given him all that she has.
  • 38. And my lord made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell;
  • 39. But thou shalt go to my father's house, and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son.
  • 40. Then I said to my lord, Peradventure the woman will not follow me.
  • 41. And he said to me, The LORD, before whom I have walked, will send his angel with you, and make your way prosperous, that you may take a wife for my son from my kindred and from my father's house;
  • 42. Then shalt thou be free from my oath, when thou goest to my kindred; and if they do not, you will be released from my oath.
  • 43. And I came this day to the fountain, and said, O LORD, God of my master Abraham, if thou now prosperest my journey, why dost thou not give success to my journey?
  • 44. Behold, I am by the fountain of water; so be it, that the damsel who goes out to draw water, and to whom I say, Please give me a drink from your pitcher,
  • 45. And she shall say unto me, Drink thou, and I will water thy camels also; let this be the woman the LORD has appointed for my master's son.
  • 46. And before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah went out with her pitcher on her shoulder, and went down to the fountain and drew water; and I said to him, Please give me a drink.
  • 47. And she hurried, and let down her pitcher from her, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also; and I drank, and also watered the camels.
  • 48. And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter are you? And she said, I am the daughter of Bethuel, son of Nahor, which Milca bore him; so I put the pendant on her nose, and the bracelets on her hands.
  • 49. And I bowed down, and worshiped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the way of truth, to take the daughter of my master's brother for his son.
  • 50. Now therefore, if ye will deal kindly and truly with my lord, tell me; and if not, tell me, so that I may turn to the right or to the left.
  • 51. And Laban and Bethuel answered, saying, This matter is of the LORD; we cannot speak to you bad or good.
  • 52. Behold, Rebekah is before thee; take her and go, and let her be your master's son's wife, as the LORD has said.
  • 53. And it came to pass, when Abraham's servant heard his words, that the LORD blessed him in all things.
  • 54. And the servant brought forth jewels of silver and jewels of gold and clothes, and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave precious things to his brother and his mother.
  • 55. And they ate and drank, he and the men that were with him, and spent the night; and they rose up in the morning, and said, Let me go to my lord.
  • 56. And they said, Let us call the damsel, and ask her will.
  • 57. And they called Rebekah, and said to her, Will you go with this man? And she said, I will.
  • 58. And they let go of Rebekah her sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men.
  • 59. And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, O our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of myriads, and may thy seed possess the gate of their enemies.
  • 60. And Rebekah and her handmaidens arose, and mounted on the camels, and followed the man; and the servant took Rebekah, and went away.
  • 61. And Isaac came from the way of Beer-Laai-Roi, because he dwelt in the south country.
  • 62. And Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the evening; and he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, the camels were coming.
  • 63. Rebekah also lifted up her eyes, and saw Isaac, and got down from the camel.
  • 64. And he said to the servant, Who is that man coming across the field to meet us? And the servant said, This is my lord. So she took the veil and covered herself.
  • 65. And the servant told Isaac all the things he had done.
  • 66. And Isaac took her to his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her. And Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.
  • 67. And it came to pass that Isaac brought Rebekah into his mother Sarah's tent, and she became his wife. Isaac loved her, and thus found comfort after his mother's death.
