The covenant of circumcision

  • 1. When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said to him: I am God Almighty; walk before me and be perfect.
  • 2. I will make a covenant between me and you and I will multiply you exceedingly.
  • 3. Abram fell face down, and God spoke to him, saying:
  • 4. As for me, this is my covenant with you: you will be the father of many nations.
  • 5. You will no longer be called Abram, but Abraham, for I have made you the father of many nations.
  • 6. I will make you exceedingly fruitful, I will make nations out of you and kings will come out of you.
  • 7. I will establish my covenant between me and you and your descendants throughout their generations, an everlasting covenant, to be your God and your descendants.
  • 8. I will give you and your descendants the land of your sojourns, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be your God.
  • 9. God said to Abraham: As for you, keep my covenant, you and your descendants throughout their generations.
  • 10. This is my covenant, which you shall keep between me and you and your descendants: every male among you shall be circumcised.
  • 11. You shall circumcise the flesh of the foreskin; This will be a sign of the covenant between me and you.
  • 12. At the age of eight days, every male among you will be circumcised throughout the generations: he who is born at home and he who is bought for money from any foreigner who is not of your descent.
  • 13. He who is born in your house and bought with your money will certainly be circumcised; So my covenant will be in your flesh as an everlasting covenant.
  • 14. The uncircumcised, the male who has not circumcised the flesh of his foreskin, that person will be cut off from his people; You violated my covenant.
  • 15. God said to Abraham: As for your wife Sarai, you shall no longer call her Sarai, but Sara.
  • 16. I will bless her and give you a son; yes, I will bless her, and she will become the mother of nations, kings of peoples will come out of her.
  • 17. Abraham fell facedown on the ground, laughed, and said to himself: Shall a son be born to a man a hundred years old? And will she give birth to Sarah, who is ninety years old?
  • 18. And Abraham said to God, May Ishmael live before you!
  • 19. God answered: Verily your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish my covenant with him, an everlasting covenant for his descendants.
  • 20. As for Ishmael, I have also heard you. Behold, I will bless it, and make it fruitful, and multiply it exceedingly; he will beget twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.
  • 21. But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, which Sarah will give you in the coming year, at this time.
  • 22. Having finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from before him.
  • 23. Abraham took his son Ishmael, all those born in his house and all those bought with his money, every male among those in Abraham's house, and circumcised them that same day, as God had commanded him.
  • 24. Abraham was ninety-nine years old when the flesh of his foreskin was circumcised.
  • 25. His son Ishmael was thirteen years old when the flesh of his foreskin was circumcised.
  • 26. That same day Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised;
  • 27. All those of his house, born at home and bought for money from abroad, were circumcised together with him.
