Abram saves Lot

  • 1. And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar, and Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim,
  • 2. that these made war with Bera king of Sodom, with Birsha king of Gomorrah, with Shinab king of Admah, with Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and with the king of Bela, which is Zoar.
  • 3. All these gathered together in the valley of Siddim, which is the Salt Sea.
  • 4. Twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
  • 5. And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaim in Ashteroth-Carnaim, and the Zuzim in Han, and the Emim in Shave-Kieriathaim,
  • 6. and to the Horites in their mount Seir, as far as the plain of Paran, which is by the wilderness.
  • 7. And they returned and came to En-Mishpath, which is Kadesh; and they smote all the land of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who lived in Hazazom-Tamar.
  • 8. And the king of Sodom went out, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar; and ordered battle against them in the valley of Siddim,
  • 9. against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goim, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Elasar; four kings against five.
  • 10. Now the valley of Siddim was full of pits of bitumen; and the king of Sodom and the king of Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and the rest fled to the mountain.
  • 11. And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their food, and went away.
  • 12. They also took Lot, who lived in Sodom, the son of Abram's brother, and his possessions, and departed.
  • 13. And one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew; he dwelt by the oak groves of Mamre the Amorite, the brother of Eshcol, and the brother of Aner; they were Abram's confederates.
  • 14. When Abram heard that his brother was imprisoned, he armed his servants, born in his house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them as far as Dan.
  • 15. And he divided himself against them by night, he and his servants, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hoba, which is on the left hand of Damascus.
  • 16. And he brought back all the goods, and he also brought back Lot his brother, and his goods, and also the women, and the people.
  • 17. Then the king of Sodom went out to meet him (after he returned from striking Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him) as far as the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's valley.
  • 18. Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought bread and wine; and this was a priest of the Most High God.
  • 19. And he blessed him, and said: Blessed be Abram of God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth;
  • 20. and blessed be the Most High God, who has delivered your enemies into your hands. And Abram gave him a tithe of everything.
  • 21. Then the king of Sodom said to Abram: Give me the people, and take the goods for yourself.
  • 22. But Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lifted up my hand to the Lord, the Most High God, the Possessor of heaven and earth,
  • 23. that from a thread to a shoe strap I will not take anything of all that is yours, lest you say, I have made Abram rich;
  • 24. except only what the young men ate and the portion of the men who went with me, Aner, Eshcol and Mamre; let them take their part.
