Abram's call

1. Now the Lord said to Abram: Go out from your country, from your kindred, and from your father's house, and go to the land that I will show you;
2. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great; and you, be a blessing.
3. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; In you all the families of the earth will be blessed.
4. So Abram departed as the Lord commanded him, and Lot went with him; and Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran.
5. Abram took Sarai, his wife, and Lot, his brother's son, and all the possessions they had acquired, and the souls they had added to them in Haran; and they went out to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to the land of Canaan.
6. Abram passed through that land to the place of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh; and the Canaanites were then in the land.
7. The Lord appeared to Abram and said to him: I will give this land to your descendants. So Abram built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.
8. From there Abram passed to the mountain east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the Lord, and called on the name of the Lord.
9. Then Abram walked, heading south.

10. Now there was a famine in that land, and Abram went down to Egypt to live there, because the famine was great in the land.
11. When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife: Now, I know that you are a beautiful woman to look at.
12. When the Egyptians see you, they will say: This is your wife. And they will kill me, leaving you alive.
13. Tell me, I pray you, that you are my sister, so that it may be well with me because of you, and that my life may be preserved for your sake.
14. When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful.
15. Pharaoh's princes also saw her, and boasted of her to him; and the woman was taken to Pharaoh's house.
16. And he did good to Abram for her sake; and he had sheep, oxen, donkeys, menservants, maidservants, donkeys, and camels.
17. But the Lord struck Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife.
18. Then Pharaoh called Abram and said, What is this that you have done to me? Why didn't you tell me she was your wife?
19. Why did you say: She is my sister? Therefore I took her for my wife; Now therefore, behold your wife; take it and go.
20. And Pharaoh gave orders concerning him to some men, and they accompanied him and his wife with all that he had.
