Abram's call

  • 1. Now the Lord said to Abram: Go out from your country, from your kindred, and from your father's house, and go to the land that I will show you;
  • 2. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great; and you, be a blessing.
  • 3. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; In you all the families of the earth will be blessed.
  • 4. So Abram departed as the Lord commanded him, and Lot went with him; and Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran.
  • 5. Abram took Sarai, his wife, and Lot, his brother's son, and all the possessions they had acquired, and the souls they had added to them in Haran; and they went out to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to the land of Canaan.
  • 6. Abram passed through that land to the place of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh; and the Canaanites were then in the land.
  • 7. The Lord appeared to Abram and said to him: I will give this land to your descendants. So Abram built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.
  • 8. From there Abram passed to the mountain east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the Lord, and called on the name of the Lord.
  • 9. Then Abram walked, heading south.

Abram in Egypt

  • 10. Now there was a famine in that land, and Abram went down to Egypt to live there, because the famine was great in the land.
  • 11. When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife: Now, I know that you are a beautiful woman to look at.
  • 12. When the Egyptians see you, they will say: This is your wife. And they will kill me, leaving you alive.
  • 13. Tell me, I pray you, that you are my sister, so that it may be well with me because of you, and that my life may be preserved for your sake.
  • 14. When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful.
  • 15. Pharaoh's princes also saw her, and boasted of her to him; and the woman was taken to Pharaoh's house.
  • 16. And he did good to Abram for her sake; and he had sheep, oxen, donkeys, menservants, maidservants, donkeys, and camels.
  • 17. But the Lord struck Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife.
  • 18. Then Pharaoh called Abram and said, What is this that you have done to me? Why didn't you tell me she was your wife?
  • 19. Why did you say: She is my sister? Therefore I took her for my wife; Now therefore, behold your wife; take it and go.
  • 20. And Pharaoh gave orders concerning him to some men, and they accompanied him and his wife with all that he had.
