Verses from Genesis, Chapter 1 of the Book of Genesis of the Bible.
The beginning of everything
- In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
- The earth was formless and empty; and there was darkness over the face of the deep, but the Spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters.
- God said: Let there be light. And there was light.
- God saw that the light was good; and made separation between light and darkness.
- And God called the light Day; and the darkness he called Night. And it was the evening and the morning, the first day.
- And God said, Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let there be separation between the waters and the waters.
- So God made the expanse, and separated the waters under the expanse from those above the expanse. And so it was done.
- God called the expansion Heavens. And it was the evening and the morning, the second day.
- And God said, Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together in one place, and the dry land may appear. And so it was done.
- God called the dry element Earth, and the gathering of waters Seas. And God saw that this was good.
- And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, and herbs yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit, according to their kinds, that have seed in them, upon the earth. And so it was done.
- So the earth produced grass, herbs yielding seed according to their kinds, and trees bearing fruit having seed in them according to their kinds. And God saw that this was good.
- And it was evening and morning, the third day.
- And God said, Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens, that there may be separation between day and night; be they for signs and for determined times and for days and years.
- And be for luminaries in the expanse of the heavens, to illuminate the earth. And so it was done.
- God therefore made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; He also made the stars.
- And God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light to the earth,
- to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that this was good.
- And it was the evening and the morning, the fourth day.
- And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly reptiles with living souls; and let the birds fly over the face of the expanse of the heavens.
- Therefore God created the sea monsters and all the living creatures that moved, which the waters produced abundantly according to their species; and every bird that flies, according to its kind. And God saw that this was good.
- Then God blessed them, saying: Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters of the seas; and let the birds multiply upon the earth.
- And it was the evening and the morning, the fifth day.
- And God said: Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kind: domestic animals, reptiles and wild animals, according to their kind. And so it was done.
- So God made wild animals according to their kind, domestic animals according to their kind, and every creeping thing on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that this was good.
- God also said: Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; let him have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.
- So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
- Then God blessed them and said to them: Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; Rule over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air and over every animal that moves on the earth. 29 And he said unto them, Behold, I have given you every seed-bearing herb that is upon the surface of the whole earth, and every tree that has seed-bearing fruit; this will be your food.
- And to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to every living thing that moves on the earth, I have given every green herb as food. And so it was done.
- God saw everything he had made, and behold, it was very good. And it was the evening and the morning, the sixth day.
