The plague of frogs

  • 1. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, This is what the Lord says: 'Let my people go, that they may serve me.
  • 2. If you refuse to let them go, I will unleash a plague of frogs on your entire territory.
  • 3. The Nile River will be full of frogs, and they will come up and enter your palace, your bedroom, your bed, the houses of your counselors, the houses of your people, your ovens and your kneading troughs.
  • 4. The frogs will come up to you, your people and all your advisors.'”
  • 5. The Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, 'Stretch out your hand with your rod over the rivers and brooks and ponds, and cause frogs to come up in the land of Egypt.'”
  • 6. Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt.
  • 7. But the enchanters of Egypt did the same thing by their enchantments. They made frogs come up into the land of Egypt.
  • 8. Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and said, “Pray to the Lord that he will take the frogs away from me and my people, and I will let the people go so that they can offer sacrifices to the Lord.”
  • 9. Moses replied, “Do you have the honor of telling me when I should pray for you, your counselors, and your people so that the frogs may be taken away from you and your houses, and only remain in the river.”
  • 10. “Tomorrow,” said Pharaoh. Moses replied, “As you wish, so that you may know that no one is like the Lord our God.
  • 11. The frogs will leave you, your homes, your counselors and your people; they will just stay in the river.”
  • 12. After this, Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, and Moses cried out to the Lord about the frogs he had brought upon Pharaoh.
  • 13. And the Lord did as Moses asked. Frogs died in houses, yards and fields.
  • 14. They piled them up in mountains, and the land became stinking.
  • 15. When Pharaoh saw that the situation had changed, he became obstinate and did not listen to them, as the Lord had said.

The plague of lice

  • 16. The Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, 'Stretch out your rod and strike the dust of the ground, and it will turn into lice throughout all Egypt.'”
  • 17. And so they did. Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod and struck the dust of the ground, and lice invaded men and animals. All the dust of the earth turned into lice throughout Egypt.
  • 18. The enchanters tried to do the same thing through their spells, but they failed. Lice invaded men and animals.
  • 19. And the enchanters said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh's heart remained stubborn, and he did not listen to them, as the Lord had said.

The plague of flies

  • 20. The Lord said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning and make yourself available to Pharaoh when he goes out to the river. Tell him: This is what the Lord says: 'Let my people go so that they may worship me.
  • 21. If you do not let my people go, I will send swarms of flies on you, on your counselors, on your people and in your homes. The houses of the Egyptians and the ground on which they walk will be full of flies.
  • 22. On that day I will separate the land of Goshen, where my people live, so that no fly will appear there. So you will know that I, the Lord, am in the midst of this land.
  • 23. I will distinguish between my people and your people. Tomorrow this sign will come to pass.'”
  • 24. And the Lord did so. Great swarms of flies invaded Pharaoh's house and the homes of his advisors. All of Egypt was ruined because of the swarms of flies.
  • 25. Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and said, “Go and offer sacrifices to your God here in the land.”
  • 26. But Moses replied, “It would not be right to do so, for the Egyptians would consider us abominable. What we would offer to the Lord our God would be offensive to them.
  • 27. If we want to offer sacrifices that are acceptable to the Lord our God, we will have to go three days into the desert.”
  • 28. “I will let you go so that you can sacrifice to the Lord your God,” said Pharaoh, “but do not go too far.” He then pleaded: “Pray to the Lord for me”.
  • 29. Moses replied, “As soon as I leave your presence, I will pray to the Lord, and tomorrow the swarms of flies will be removed from Pharaoh, his advisors and his people. But let Pharaoh not act falsely again, not letting the people go to offer sacrifices to the Lord.”
  • 30. Then Moses went out from Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord.
  • 31. And the Lord did as Moses asked. The swarms of flies were removed from Pharaoh, his counselors and his people; not a single one was left.
  • 32. But even so Pharaoh became obstinate and did not let the people go.
