Aaron spokesman for Moses

  • 1. The Lord said to Moses, “See! I have made you as God to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother will be your prophet.
  • 2. You will say everything I command you, and Aaron, your brother, will speak to Pharaoh so that he will let the Israelites leave his country.
  • 3. But I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and I will multiply my signs and wonders in Egypt.
  • 4. Pharaoh, however, will not listen to them. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and with great acts of judgment I will take my armies, my people, the Israelites, out of the country.
  • 5. And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of there.”
  • 6. Moses and Aaron did as the Lord commanded them.
  • 7. Moses was eighty years old and Aaron was eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh.

Moses' rod turns into a serpent

  • 8. The Lord said to Moses and Aaron:
  • 9. “If Pharaoh asks you to perform a miracle, tell Aaron to cast his rod before Pharaoh, and it will turn into a snake.”
  • 10. Then Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did as the Lord had commanded. Aaron threw the rod before Pharaoh and his advisors, and it turned into a snake.
  • 11. But Pharaoh called the wise men and enchanters, and they also, by their enchantments, did the same thing.
  • 12. Each one threw down his rod, and they turned into snakes. But Aaron's rod swallowed their rods.
  • 13. However, Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the Lord had said.

The plague of waters turned to blood

  • 14. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is stubborn; he refuses to let the people go.
  • 15. Go to Pharaoh in the morning, when he is going out to the river, and wait for him on the bank of the Nile. Take in your hand the stick that turned into a snake.
  • 16. Say to him, 'The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, sent me to you with this message: Let my people go, that they may serve me in the wilderness. Until now you have not obeyed me.
  • 17. Thus says the Lord: By this you will know that I am the Lord: with this rod that I have in my hand I will strike the waters of the Nile, and they will turn to blood.
  • 18. The fish in the Nile will die, and the river will smell bad. The Egyptians will be disgusted to drink water from the Nile'.”
  • 19. The Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, 'Take the rod and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over the rivers, streams, ponds and all the pools, so that they may turn to blood. There will be blood all over the country, even on wooden and stone vessels.'”
  • 20. Moses and Aaron did as the Lord commanded them. In the presence of Pharaoh and his advisors, Aaron lifted the rod and struck the waters of the Nile, and all the water in the river turned to blood.
  • 21. The fish in the Nile died, the river smelled bad, and the Egyptians could not drink the water from the Nile. There was blood all over the country.
  • 22. But the enchanters of Egypt did the same thing by their enchantments, so that Pharaoh's heart remained obstinate. He did not listen to them, as the Lord had said.
  • 23. Pharaoh returned to the palace and paid no attention to it.
  • 24. And all the Egyptians dug by the Nile for drinking water, for they could not drink the water of the river.
  • 25. Seven days passed after the Lord struck the Nile.
