Exodus - Old Testament
Exodus – Old Testament
  • 1. And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, go up hence, thou and the people whom thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, I will give it unto thy seed.
  • 2. And I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, and the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites,
  • 3. to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not come up among you, because you are a stiff-necked people, lest I consume you on the way.
  • 4. And when the people heard this bad news, they mourned; and no one put his ornaments on himself.
  • 5. For the LORD said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Thou art a stiff-necked people; in a moment I will come up among you, and consume you; Therefore now take off your ornaments from off you, so that I may know what I will do to you.
  • 6. And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments from Mount Horeb onward.

The tent of encounter with God

  • 7. And Moses took the tent, and pitched it for himself without the camp, far from the camp; and he called it the tent of meeting. And it came to pass that everyone who sought the LORD went out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp.
  • 8. And it came to pass, when Moses went out into the tent, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at the door of his tent, and looked after Moses, until he entered the tent.
  • 9. And it came to pass, when Moses entered the tent, that the pillar of cloud came down, and stood at the door of the tent; and the LORD spoke with Moses.
  • 10. And all the people saw the pillar of cloud that was at the door of the tent; and all the people stood up and bowed themselves, each one at the door of his tent.
  • 11. And the LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as one speaks to his friend; then he returned to the camp; but his servant, young Joshua, son of Nun, never left the tent.

Moses and the glory of the Lord

  • 12. And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people; but you do not let me know whom you will send with me; and thou saidst, I know thee by thy name: thou also hast found grace in my sight.
  • 13. Now therefore, if I have found grace in thy sight, I beseech thee to make known thy way to me at this moment, that I may know thee, and find grace in thy sight; and consider this nation to be your people.
  • 14. And he said, My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.
  • 15. And he said, If thy presence be not with me, bring us not up hence.
  • 16. Is it not so that you bring us up, when you make us say: Bring us up from here? Do you really not know me, that I should find favor in your eyes?
  • 17. Now therefore I beseech thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, now let me know thy way, that I may know thee, and find grace in thy sight; and consider this nation to be your people.
  • 18. Then he said: Make me see your glory.
  • 19. And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before you; and I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
  • 20. And he said, Thou shalt not be able to see my face: for no man shall see my face, and live.
  • 21. And the LORD said, Behold a place near me; there you will stand on the rock.
  • 22. And it shall come to pass, when my glory passes away, that I will put thee in a cleft of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand, until I have passed by.
  • 23. And when I have removed my hand, you will see my back; but my face will not be seen.
