The burning bush

  • 1. Moses was pasturing the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, a priest of Midian. One day he led the flock beyond the desert and arrived at the mountain of God, Horeb.
  • 2. There the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire, from the middle of a bush. Moses looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but it was not consumed.
  • 3. Then Moses said, “I will turn aside and see this great vision: Why does the bush not burn?”
  • 4. When the Lord saw him turning aside to look, God called to him from the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” He replied: “Here I am.”
  • 5. And God said, “Do not come near here. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you are is holy ground.”
  • 6. And he continued: “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” So Moses covered his face, because he was afraid to look at God.
  • 7. The Lord said, “I have certainly seen the affliction of my people in Egypt, and I have heard their cry because of their oppressors. I know their suffering.
  • 8. Therefore I have come down to deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them from here to a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey. The place where the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Amorites, the Hivites and the Jebusites now are.
  • 9. Yes, the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians are mistreating them.
  • 10. Now go. I am sending him to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.”
  • 11. But Moses said to God, “Who am I to go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
  • 12. And God said to him: “I will be with you. And this will be the sign that I am the one who sent you: after bringing the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
  • 13. Then Moses asked God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your ancestors sent me to you.' And if they ask me, 'What's his name?', what will I tell them?"
  • 14. God said to Moses: “I Am That I Am. This is what you will say to the Israelites: I Am has sent me to you.”
  • 15. God said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, 'The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, the name by which I will be remembered from generation to generation.
  • 16. Go, gather together the leaders of Israel and say to them, 'The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, appeared to me and said: I have cared for you and I have seen what it has been done to you in Egypt.
  • 17. Therefore I decided to deliver them from their suffering in Egypt and take them to a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey, the place of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites.' .
  • 18. The leaders of Israel will heed your word, and you will go with them to the king of Egypt and say, 'The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has met us. Now let us go on a three-day journey through the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God.'
  • 19. But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go except under the pressure of a mighty hand.
  • 20. Therefore I will stretch out my hand and strike the Egyptians with all the signs that I will perform among them. After that he will let them go.
  • 21. I will make the Egyptians have compassion on you, so that when you go out, they will not leave you empty-handed.
  • 22. Each woman will ask her neighbor and her guest for articles of silver and gold, as well as clothes. You will place them on your sons and daughters, and in this way you will spoil the Egyptians.”
