Commandments about servants

  • 1. And these are the laws that you will propose to them.
  • 2. If you buy a Hebrew servant, he will serve six years; but on the seventh he will go free, for free.
  • 3. If you entered single, you will leave single; if he was married, his wife will also go out with him.
  • 4. If his master has given him a wife, and she has borne him sons or daughters, the wife and her children will be his master's, and he will go out alone.
  • 5. But if the servant expressly says: I love my master, my wife and my children, I do not want to go free;
  • 6. then his master will take him to God, and bring him to the door or the doorpost; and his master will pierce his ear with an awl; and he will serve you forever.
  • 7. And if a man sells his daughter to be a servant, she will not go out as servants do.
  • 8. If she does not please her master, so that he does not marry her, then he will let her be redeemed; he will not be able to sell it to a foreign people, since he has dishonored it.
  • 9. And if he assigns her to his son, he will do with her according to the right of daughters.
  • 10. If he takes another wife, he will not degrade the first in food, clothing and cohabitation.
  • 11. And if you do not do these three things to her, then she will go free, without money.

Personal injuries

  • 12. Whoever strikes any man so that he dies will certainly be put to death.
  • 13. But if he did not lie in wait for him, but God delivered him into his hands, then I will establish for you a place where he can flee.
  • 14. But when someone becomes angry with his neighbor and seeks to kill him by lying in wait, you will take him from my altar so that he may die.
  • 15. Whoever harms his father or mother will certainly be killed.
  • 16. And whoever kidnaps any man, whether to sell him or to keep him in his possession, will certainly be put to death.
  • 17. Whoever curses his father or mother will certainly be killed.
  • 18. If men fight, and one strikes another with a stone or with a fist, and the wounded man does not die, but falls ill;
  • 19. if he gets up and walks outside on his staff, then the one who injured him will be absolved; He will only pay you for lost time, and will see to it that you are treated until you are healthy.
  • 20. And if anyone strikes his manservant or his maidservant with a stick, and he dies under his hand, he will certainly be punished;
  • 21. But if the servant survives for one or two days, he will not be punished, as it is his money.
  • 22. If some men fight and injure a pregnant woman, and cause her to miscarry, but if there is no other harm, the one who injured him will be fined, according to what the woman's husband imposes on him, and will pay according to the discretion of the judges.
  • 23. But if there is grievous harm, then thou shalt give life for life,
  • 24. an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a hand for a hand, a foot for a foot,
  • 25. burn for burn, wound for wound, blow for blow.
  • 26. And when anyone hurts the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maidservant, and damages it, he will let him go free through his eye.
  • 27. And if he causes his servant's tooth to fall out, or the tooth of his maidservant, he will let him go free through his tooth.
  • 28. And when an ox strikes a man or a woman with its horns, and he dies, then the ox shall be stoned, and its flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox will be acquitted.
  • 29. But if the ox was previously known to its owner, and if he did not keep it, so that it kills a man or a woman, the ox will be stoned, and its owner will also be killed.
  • 30. If a ransom is imposed on him, then he will give as ransom for his life everything that is imposed on him.
  • 31. If the ox hurts the son or daughter, it will be done to him according to this same law.
  • 32. If the ox hurts the male or female servant, his master will be given thirty shekels of silver, and the ox will be stoned.
  • 33. And when anyone digs a pit, or when someone digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or an ass falls into it,
  • 34. the owner of the pit will pay it; He will give money to the owner of the dead animal, and the dead animal will be his.
  • 35. And if anyone's ox hurts his neighbor's ox so that it dies, then they will sell the ox alive and share the money from it; and they will also divide the dead ox.
  • 36. But if it is known that that ox was previously known to be dangerous, and its owner did not keep it, he will pay ox for ox; but the dead one will be yours.
