The birth of Moses

  • 1. A man from the tribe of Levi married a woman also from the tribe of Levi.
  • 2. The woman became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw him, she realized that he was a beautiful child and hid him for three months.
  • 3. When she could no longer hide him, she took a reed basket, caulked it with bitumen and pitch, placed the boy in it and placed him among the reeds on the banks of the Nile River.
  • 4. The boy's sister stood some distance away to see what would happen to him.
  • 5. Then Pharaoh's daughter went down to bathe in the river, and her maidservants walked along the river bank. She saw the basket among the reeds and ordered one of her servants to pick it up.
  • 6. When he opened the basket, he saw the boy. It was a boy crying. She felt sorry for him and said, “This is one of the Hebrew boys.”
  • 7. Then the boy's sister asked Pharaoh's daughter, “Should I go and call a Hebrew woman to look after the boy for you?”
  • 8. “Go,” replied Pharaoh’s daughter. The girl went and called the boy's mother.
  • 9. Pharaoh's daughter said to the woman, “Take this child and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” The woman took the boy and breastfed him.
  • 10. When the boy grew up, she took him to Pharaoh's daughter, who adopted him as her own son. She named him Moses, saying, “Because I drew him out of the water.”

Moses kills an Egyptian and escapes

  • 11. Once, when Moses had grown up, he went to where his Hebrew brothers were and witnessed the difficulties they were facing. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his compatriots.
  • 12. Looking around and seeing that no one was there, Moses killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.
  • 13. The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the attacker: “Why are you hitting your compatriot?”
  • 14. The man replied, “Who made you our leader and judge? Do you intend to kill me like you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought: “The case has already been discovered!”
  • 15. When Pharaoh heard what had happened, he tried to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the presence of Pharaoh and went to live in the land of Midian, where he sat by a well.
  • 16. The priest of Midian had seven daughters, who came to draw water and fill the canoes to water their father's flock.
  • 17. Some shepherds arrived and drove them away, but Moses defended them and gave water to their flock.
  • 18. When they returned home, Reuel, their father, asked: “Why did you return so quickly today?”
  • 19. They replied, “An Egyptian delivered us from the hand of the shepherds. Furthermore, he drew water for us and gave water to the flock.”
  • 20. “And where is he?” he asked his son. “Why did you let him go? Call him to eat with us.”
  • 21. Moses agreed to live with the man, who gave him his daughter Zipporah in marriage.
  • 22. Zipporah gave birth to a son, whom Moses named Gershon, saying, “I was a stranger in a foreign land.”
  • 23. For a long time the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned and cried out for help because of their oppression, and their cry reached God.
  • 24. God heard their groaning and remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
  • 25. God looked at the Israelites and worried about them.
