God speaks from Mount Sinai

  • 1. In the third month after the Israelites left Egypt, on the same day, they arrived in the Sinai desert.
  • 2. Having left Rephidim, they arrived in the Sinai desert and camped there, in front of the mountain.
  • 3. Moses went up to meet God, and the Lord called him from the mountain, saying: “This is what you will say to the descendants of Jacob and announce to the children of Israel:
  • 4. You have seen what I did to the Egyptians and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself.
  • 5. Now therefore, if you diligently obey my voice and keep my covenant, then you will be my treasured possession above all people; for all the earth is mine;
  • 6. You will be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words you will speak to the children of Israel.”
  • 7. Moses summoned the elders of the people and explained to them everything that the Lord had commanded him.
  • 8. The people all responded unanimously: “Everything the Lord has spoken, we will do.” And Moses reported to the Lord the words of the people.
  • 9. The Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will come to you in a dark cloud, that the people may hear when I speak to you, and that they may always believe in you.” And Moses told the Lord the words of the people.
  • 10. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and sanctify them today and tomorrow. Wash your clothes
  • 11. and be prepared for the third day, for on the third day the Lord will descend on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.
  • 12. Set limits around the mountain, and say to the people: Beware of going up to the mountain and touching its border; Whoever touches the mountain will surely die.
  • 13. No hand will touch him, for he will be stoned or shot with arrows; whether animal or man, he will not live. When the horn sounds for a long time, then they will go up to the mountain.”
  • 14. Then Moses came down from the mountain to the people, and sanctified the people; and washed their clothes.
  • 15. And he said unto the people, Be ready on the third day; and do not go near the woman.
  • 16. On the third day, at dawn, there was thunder and lightning and a thick cloud on the mountain, and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled.
  • 17. And Moses led the people outside the camp to meet God; and they stood at the foot of the mountain.
  • 18. All Mount Sinai was smoking, because the Lord had descended on it in fire; the smoke rose like smoke from a furnace, and the whole mountain shook greatly.
  • 19. The sound of the trumpet grew louder each time
  • 20. When the Lord came down to Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain, he called Moses to come up. And Moses went up.
  • 21. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down and warn the people not to go beyond the limits to see the Lord, lest many of them perish.
  • 22. Let the priests also, who draw near to the Lord, sanctify themselves, lest the Lord strike them.”
  • 23. Months
  • 24. The Lord said to him, “Go, come down; then you will go up, and Aaron with you; but let not the priest or the people come near to come up to the Lord, lest he smite them.”
  • 25. Then Moses went down to the people and spoke.
