The locust plague

  • 1. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh, for I have made his heart and the hearts of his counselors obstinate, to show them my signs.
  • 2. You can tell your children and grandchildren how I mocked the Egyptians and how I performed my miraculous signs among them. So you will know that I am the Lord.”
  • 3. Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, “This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: 'How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, so that they may worship me.
  • 4. If you refuse to let my people go, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your territory.
  • 5. They will cover the face of the earth, so that you will not be able to see it. They will devour what is left of the hail, they will destroy all the trees that have sprouted in the field
  • 6. and they will fill their houses, the houses of their counselors and the houses of all the Egyptians – something that their ancestors and their ancestors have never seen from the day they existed until this day'”. Then Moses turned and left Pharaoh.
  • 7. Pharaoh's counselors said to him, “How long will this man remain a trap for us? Let men go and worship the Lord their God. Haven’t you realized yet that Egypt is ruined?”
  • 8. Then Moses and Aaron were taken back to Pharaoh, and he said to them, “Go, worship the Lord your God. But which ones will go?”
  • 9. Moses replied, “We will go with our young and old, with our sons and daughters, with our sheep and oxen, because we must celebrate a festival to the Lord.”
  • 10. He replied, “The Lord be with you if I let you and your children go! They are clearly up to no good.
  • 11. No! Only you men go and worship the Lord, for this is what you asked for.” Then Moses and Aaron were expelled from Pharaoh.
  • 12. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the territory of Egypt, so that the locusts may come and devour all the vegetation, everything that remains from the hail.”
  • 13. Moses stretched out his rod over Egypt, and the Lord caused an east wind to blow over the land all that day and night. When dawn came, the east wind had brought the locusts.
  • 14. Locusts invaded all of Egypt and concentrated throughout Egypt in large numbers; Never before have there been so many locusts, nor will there be after them.
  • 15. They covered the whole face of the earth and darkened it. They devoured all the vegetation in the field and all the fruit of the trees that remained from the hail. There was nothing green left in the trees and plants of the field throughout Egypt.
  • 16. Pharaoh hurriedly called Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you.
  • 17. Now forgive my sin this once again and pray to the Lord your God that he will take away this deadly plague from me.”
  • 18. Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord.
  • 19. And the Lord caused a strong west wind to blow, and it carried away the locusts and threw them into the Red Sea. There was not a single locust left in all of Egypt.
  • 20. But the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the Israelites go.

The plague of darkness

  • 21. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven, and there will be darkness over Egypt—darkness as dark as has ever been seen.”
  • 22. Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and for three days there was deep darkness throughout Egypt.
  • 23. No one could see anyone or leave their place for three days. However, all the Israelites had light in the places where they lived.
  • 24. Then Pharaoh called Moses and said, “Go, worship the Lord. Your children can also go with you, but leave the sheep and cattle here.”
  • 25. Moses replied, “You yourself must provide us with the animals for the sacrifices and burnt offerings that we will make to the Lord our God.
  • 26. Furthermore, we will also take our livestock with us, for we need them to worship the Lord our God. We don’t know what animals we will have to offer to the Lord until we get there.”
  • 27. But the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he refused to let them go.
  • 28. Then Pharaoh said to Moses, “Get out of my presence! Be careful not to appear before me again! The day you see me, you will surely die.”
  • 29. “Very well,” replied Moses, “you said yourself that you would not see him again.”
