  • 2. and when you and your children return to the Lord your God and obey him with all your heart and with all your soul, following everything I command you today,
  • 3. Then the Lord your God will restore you and have compassion on you and will gather you together again from all the nations where he has scattered you.
  • 4. Even if they have been taken to the most distant land under heaven, from there the Lord their God will gather them and bring them back.
  • 5. He will lead you to the land of your ancestors, and you will take possession of it. He will make them more prosperous and numerous than their ancestors.
  • 6. The Lord your God will give you and your descendants a faithful heart, that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and that you may live.
  • 7. The Lord your God will bring all these curses on your enemies who hate you and persecute you.
  • 8. You will return to obey the Lord and follow all his commandments that I give you today.

  • The choice between life and death

The choice of life or death

  • 11. The commandment I give you today is not too difficult, nor is it beyond your reach.
  • 12 It is not in heaven, so that you have to ask, “Who will ascend to heaven to bring it to us and make it known so that we may obey it?”
  • 13. Nor is it on the other side of the sea, so that you have to ask, “Who will cross the sea to bring it to us and make it known so that we will obey it?”
  • 14. The word is very close to you; it is in their mouths and in their hearts, that they may obey it.
  • 15. See, today I set before you life and prosperity, death and destruction.
  • 16. For today I command you to love the Lord your God, to walk in his ways and to keep his commandments, decrees and ordinances. Then you will have life and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.
  • 17. But if your heart turns away and you do not obey, and you allow yourselves to worship other gods and bow down to them,
  • 18. I declare today that you will certainly be destroyed. They will not live long in the land they are entering to possess after crossing the Jordan.
  • 19. Today I call heaven and earth to witness against you that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Now choose life, so that you and your descendants may live,
  • 20. Love the Lord your God, listen to his voice and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land that he swore to give to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
