The renewal of the covenant

  • 1. These are the terms of the covenant which the Lord commanded to be made by Moses with the Israelites in Moab, in addition to the covenant which he had made with them in Horeb.
  • 2. Moses called together all the Israelites and said to them: “You yourselves have seen everything that the Lord did in Egypt, in the eyes of Pharaoh, his officials and his entire land.
  • 3. With your own eyes, you have witnessed the great trials, the signs and the miracles.
  • 4. Yet to this day the Lord has not given them hearts to understand, eyes to see, nor ears to hear.
  • 5. During the forty years in the desert, his clothes did not wear out, nor did his sandals on his feet.
  • 6. You did not eat bread or drink wine or any fermented drink. This was to let you know that I am the Lord your God.”
  • 7. “When you came to this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan attacked us, but we defeated them.
  • 8. We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the tribes of Reuben, Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh.
  • 9. “Therefore, obey the terms of this covenant faithfully, so that you may be successful in everything you do.
  • 10. Today, all of you stand before the Lord your God: tribal leaders, elders, officials, all the men of Israel,
  • 11. along with your children, your wives, and the foreigners among you, chopping wood and carrying water.
  • 12. You are here to enter into a covenant with the Lord your God, a covenant he is making with you today, confirmed by oaths.
  • 13. He chose you today to be his special people and promised that he would be your God, as he promised your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
  • 14. I am not making this covenant just with you who are here today in the presence of the Lord our God,
  • 15. but also with those who are not here with us now.
  • 16. You know how we lived in Egypt and how we passed through the nations we met along the way.
  • 17. You have seen the idols and disgusting images of these nations, made of wood, stone, silver and gold.
  • 18. Be careful that there is no one among you, man, woman, clan or tribe, whose heart turns away from the Lord our God to worship the gods of these nations. Let there not be a root among you that produces poisonous and bitter fruit.
  • 19. If anyone hears the words of this oath, but thinks in his heart, 'I will be safe even if I follow my own ways,' he will bring misfortune on all the watered land, as well as on the dry land.
  • 20. The Lord will never forgive you again. His wrath and zeal will burn against that person, and all the curses written in this book will fall on him. The Lord will erase that person's name from under heaven.
  • 21. The Lord will separate her from all the tribes of Israel, to disaster, according to all the curses of this covenant written in this Book of the Law.
  • 22. Future generations, both your children and foreigners from distant lands, will see the calamities that will come to this land and the diseases with which the Lord will afflict it.
  • 23. The whole earth will become a scorching desert of salt and sulfur, where nothing will be planted, and no vegetation will grow. It will be like the destruction of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord destroyed in his anger and wrath.
  • 24. All the nations will ask, 'Why did the Lord do this to this land? Why so much anger and fury?'
  • 25. And the answer will be: 'Because these people have abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, which he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt.
  • 26. They turned to worship strange gods, gods they had not known before, gods the Lord had not given them.
  • 27. Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against this land, bringing upon it all the curses written in this book.
  • 28. The Lord, filled with fury, indignation and great wrath, cast them out of their land, and they were taken to a new land, as can be seen today.'
  • 29. “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the revealed things belong to us and to our children forever, so that we may obey all the words of this law.
