The Altar on Mount Ebal

  • 1. Moses, accompanied by the leaders of Israel, commanded the people: “Listen carefully to all this law that I am giving you today.
  • 2. When you cross the Jordan into the land the LORD your God is giving you, set up large stones and coat them with lime.
  • 3. Write on them all the words of this law, as soon as you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as he promised your ancestors.
  • 4. As you cross the Jordan, set up these stones on Mount Ebal, as I am commanding you today, and coat them with lime.
  • 5. On the mountain, build an altar to the Lord your God, an altar made of rough stones. Do not use iron tools on stones.
  • 6. Build the altar of the LORD your God with unworked stone, and offer burnt offerings to the LORD your God on it.
  • 7. Also offer fellowship sacrifices, eat and make merry before the LORD your God.
  • 8. On the stones you raise, write clearly all the words of this law ".

Curse of Mount Ebal

  • 9. Then Moses, together with the Levitical priests, said to all the people of Israel: “Be silent and listen, O Israel! Today you have become the people of the Lord your God.
  • 10. Obey the Lord your God and follow his commands and decrees that I am giving you today.”
  • 11. That same day Moses gave the following instructions to the people:
  • 12. “When they cross the Jordan, the tribes that will remain on Mount Gerizim to bless the people will be: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph and Benjamin.
  • 13. And the tribes that will remain on Mount Ebal to proclaim curses will be: Reuben, Gad, Aser, Zebulun, Dan and Naphtali.
  • 14. “Then the Levites will say with a loud voice to all the people of Israel:
  • 15. "Cursed be he who makes a carved or cast image, an abomination in the sight of the LORD, and sets it up in a secret place." And all the people will say, “Amen!”
  • 16. "Cursed be he who dishonors his father or mother." And all the people will say, “Amen!”
  • 17. "Cursed be he who changes his neighbor's borders." And all the people will say, “Amen!”
  • 18. "Cursed be he who causes the blind to stray out of the way." And all the people will say, “Amen!”
  • 19. "Cursed be he who withholds justice from the stranger, the orphan, and the widow." And all the people will say, “Amen!”
  • 20. "Cursed be he who lies with his father's wife, dishonoring his father's bed." And all the people will say, “Amen!”
  • 21. “Cursed is he who has relations with an animal”. And all the people will say, “Amen!”
  • 22. "Cursed be he who lies with his sister, the daughter of his father or mother." And all the people will say, “Amen!”
  • 23. “Cursed be he who lies with his mother-in-law.” And all the people will say, “Amen!”
  • 24. "Cursed be he who kills his neighbor in secret." And all the people will say, “Amen!”
  • 25. "Cursed be he who takes a bribe to kill an innocent person." And all the people will say, “Amen!”
  • 26. "Cursed be he who does not faithfully fulfill the words of this law." And all the people will say, “Amen!”
