Offerings for the priests and Levites

  • 1. “The Levitical priests and the entire tribe of Levi will have no property or inheritance in Israel. They will live on the offerings sacrificed to the Lord, which are prepared by fire, for this is their portion.
  • 2. They will have no inheritance among their brothers; the Lord is their inheritance, as He promised them.
  • 3. When the people offer an ox or a sheep as a sacrifice, the priests will receive the designated portion: the thigh, the face and the stomach.
  • 4. They will also give them the first fruits of the wheat, wine and oil, and the first wool from the sheep sheared,
  • 5. for the Lord chose the Levites and their descendants from all tribes to serve in His presence and minister in His name.
  • 6. If a Levite living in any city in Israel wishes to go to the place chosen by the Lord,
  • 7. he can minister in the name of the Lord his God, just like the other Levites who serve in the presence of the Lord.
  • 8. He will receive the same portion of food as the other Levites, in addition to what he obtains from the sale of his family's possessions.

The detestable practices

  • 9. When you enter the land that the Lord your God is giving you, do not imitate the disgusting practices of the nations who live there.
  • 10. Do not allow anyone to be found among you who burns his son or daughter as an offering; who practices divination, magic, omens, sorcery,
  • 11. enchantments, be a medium, consult spirits or seek guidance from the dead.
  • 12. For the Lord detests those who practice such things, and it is because of these abominations that the Lord your God will drive those nations out from his presence.
  • 13. Be blameless before the Lord your God.
  • 14. The nations you are about to dispossess listen to those who practice magic and divination, but the Lord your God has not allowed you to follow these practices.

The profet

  • 15. The Lord your God will raise up a prophet like me from among his brothers; listen to him.
  • 16. This is what you asked of the Lord your God in Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, 'We no longer want to hear the voice of the Lord our God or see this great fire, or we will die!'
  • 17. The Lord said to me, 'They spoke correctly.
  • 18. I will raise up a prophet like you from among them. I will put My words in his mouth, and he will tell him everything I command him.
  • 19. If anyone does not listen to My words, which this prophet will speak in My name, I Myself will call him to account.
  • 20. However, the prophet who dares to speak in My name something that I have not commanded, or who speaks in the name of other gods, will be killed.'
  • 21. You may ask, 'How do we know if a message is not from the Lord?'
  • 22. If what the prophet speaks in the name of the Lord is not fulfilled or happens, this message does not come from the Lord. The prophet spoke with presumption, so do not be afraid of him.
