Pure and impure food

  • 1. “You are children of the Lord your God. Do not make cuts on your bodies or shave the front of your heads for the sake of the dead,
  • 2. for you are a people consecrated to the Lord your God. Among all the peoples of the earth, the Lord chose them to be his personal treasure.
  • 3. “Do not eat anything that is prohibited.
  • 4. You can eat the following animals: ox, sheep, goat,
  • 5. deer, gazelle, roe deer, mountain goat, antelope, wild goat and wild sheep.
  • 6. They can eat any animal that has a hoof divided into two nails and that chews the cud.
  • 7. However, they cannot eat the camel, the rabbit and the mouse, because, although they chew the cud, they do not have a divided hoof. They are unclean to you.
  • 8. The pig is also unclean, although its hoof is split. They cannot eat the meat of these animals or touch their corpses.
  • 9. “They can eat any creature that lives in water and has fins and scales.
  • 10. But they cannot eat aquatic creatures that have neither fins nor scales. They are unclean to you.
  • 11. “You can eat any pure bird.
  • 12. However, they cannot eat the eagle, the vulture, the vulture,
  • 13. the hawk, any kind of crow,
  • 14. the owl, the hawk, any kind of falcon,
  • 15. the owl, the snowy owl, the burrowing owl, any species of hawk,
  • 16. the pelican, the Egyptian vulture, the rook,
  • 17. the ibis, the swan, the sea pelican,
  • 18. the sun owl, the Arabian vulture, the sparrow and the bat.
  • 19. “All small winged creatures are unclean to you; don't eat them.
  • 20. However, they can eat any winged creature that is pure.
  • 21. “Do not eat anything that has died of itself. They can give it to a foreigner who lives in any of their cities, and he can eat it, or they can sell it to a foreigner. But you are a people consecrated to the Lord your God. “Do not cook a kid in its own mother's milk.

The tithe

  • 22. “Set aside your tithe of everything the land produces annually.
  • 23. Eat the tithe of the grain, the new wine, the oil, and the first offspring of your flocks in the presence of the Lord your God, in the place he chooses as the dwelling place for his name. In this way, they will learn to always fear the Lord, their God.
  • 24. But if the place is too far away and the Lord your God has blessed you abundantly, and you cannot take your tithe there because the place chosen by the Lord to put his name there is too far away,
  • 25. Exchange your tithe for silver and take the silver to the place the Lord your God has chosen.
  • 26. Use the silver to buy anything you want: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything else you want. Eat and be merry there, in the presence of the Lord your God, together with your families.
  • 27. Never forget the Levites who live in your cities, because they have no property or inheritance of their own.
  • 28. Every three years, bring all the tithes of that year's harvest and store them in your cities.
  • 29. So the Levites, who have no property or inheritance, and the foreigners, orphans, and widows who live in their cities, will come and eat until they are satisfied. So the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.
