New tables of the law

  • 1. “At that moment the Lord said to me, 'Cut two stone tablets like the first and come up to me on the mountain. Also make a wooden chest.
  • 2. I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets that you broke, and you will place them in the ark.'
  • 3. Then I made an ark of acacia wood and carved two stone tablets like the first ones. I climbed the mountain with the boards in my hands.
  • 4. The Lord wrote on them the same thing that was on the first tablets: the Ten Commandments that he had given them on the mountain, on the day of the assembly. Then he placed them in the ark that I had made, and they remained there, as the Lord commanded me.
  • 5. I left the mountain and went down, placing the boards in the ark that I had made. They are still there, as the Lord commanded me.”
  • 6. The Israelites left Beeroth-Bene-Jaachan for Moserah. There Aaron died and was buried, and Eleazar his son succeeded him as priest.

  • 8. At that time the Lord separated the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the Lord's covenant, to stand before the Lord to serve him and to pronounce blessings in his name, as he does to this day.
  • 9. Therefore, the Levites have no share or inheritance with their brothers; the Lord is your inheritance, as the Lord your God promised you.
  • 10. I remained on the mountain, as I had done before, forty days and forty nights; the Lord heard me this time too, and did not want to destroy them.
  • 11. But the Lord said to me, 'Get up, go ahead of the people, so that they can enter and take possession of the land that I swore to their ancestors.'

Fear and obey the Lord

  • 12. And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, and to serve the LORD your God? your God, with all your heart and with all your soul,
  • 13. and obey the commandments and decrees of the Lord, which I give you today for your own good?
  • 14. See, from the heavens the Lord your God looks and observes, from the heavens he sees all the children of men.
  • 15. From his dwelling place he observes all the inhabitants of the earth;
  • 16. he, who forms the hearts of all, who knows everything they do.
  • 17. The Lord chose your people to be his own people, above all the nations of the earth, as he promised you with an oath, and he took care of you, bringing you out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
  • 18. The Lord addressed me, saying, 'I have seen these people, and they are truly obstinate!
  • 19. Let me destroy them and blot out their names from under heaven. Then I will make you a nation stronger and more numerous than they.'
  • 20. So I prostrated myself before the Lord forty more days and forty nights; I did not eat bread or drink water because of all the sin you had committed in doing evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking his anger.
  • 21. I feared the wrath and indignation of the Lord, for he was so angry with you that he wanted to destroy you. But again the Lord heard me.
