Numbers Verses, Chapter 36 of the Book of Numbers in the Bible.
The Inheritance of the Daughters of Zelophehad
- 1. Then the clan heads of the family of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, approached and spoke before Moses and the leaders, clan heads of the Israelites.
- 2. They said, “The Lord commanded my lord to give the land as an inheritance by lot to the Israelites. And my lord received this order from the Lord.
- 3. Now, if the men of the tribe of Manasseh, our relatives, are considered as one family, they will marry any woman from one of the other tribes of Israel. Then the inheritance we receive will be reduced and their inheritance will increase.
- 4. When the year of Jubilee comes for the Israelites, their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the other tribes, so that it will be taken from our family inheritance.”
- 5. Then Moses gave an order to the Israelites, according to the word of the Lord: ′′ The tribe of the descendants of Joseph is right.
- 6. This is what the Lord commands concerning the daughters of Zelophehad: they may marry whomever they want, as long as it is within the clan family of their father's tribe.
- 7. So the inheritance of the Israelites will not be transferred from one tribe to another, but each tribe of the Israelites will keep its own inheritance”.
- 8. Every daughter who inherits property in any of the tribes of Israel must marry someone from the family of her father's clan, so that all Israelites will possess the inheritance of their fathers.
- 9. No inheritance may be transferred from one tribe to another, but each tribe of the Israelites will keep its own inheritance”.
- 10. The daughters of Zelophehad did as the Lord had commanded Moses.
- 11. Poá, Tíria, Hogla, Milca and Noa, daughters of Zelofehad, married the maternal nephews.
- 12. They intermarried within the clans of the Manassites, son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of their father's family.
- 13. These are the commandments and ordinances which the Lord gave through Moses to the Israelites in the plains of Moab by the Jordan toward Jericho.
