Census of Israelites

  • 1. The LORD spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting, in the Sinai desert, on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites left Egypt. He said:
  • 2. “Take a census of the entire community of Israel, according to their families and the houses of their ancestors, counting the names of all the males,
  • 3. from twenty years old and over, fit to serve in the army of Israel. Make a list, according to your divisions, of their army, you and Aaron.
  • 4. “Having a man from each tribe, each of the tribal leaders, to help them,
  • 5. This is the census result:
  • From the tribe of Reuben, Eliab, son of Zuri.
  • 6. Of the tribe of Simeon, Selumiel, son of Zurisadai.
  • 7. Of the tribe of Judah, Nahshon, son of Amminadab.
  • 8. Of the tribe of Issachar, Nathanael, son of Zuar.
  • 9. From the tribe of Zebulun, Eliab, son of Helon.
  • 10. Of the tribe of the children of Joseph: Of the tribe of Ephraim, Elisama, son of Ammihud; Of the tribe of Manasseh, Gamaliel, son of Pedazur.
  • 11. Of the tribe of Benjamin, Abidan, son of Gideoni.
  • 12. Of the tribe of Dan, Airam the son of Amishadai.
  • 13. Of the tribe of Asher, Pagiel, son of Ocran.
  • 14. Of the tribe of Gad, Eliasafe, son of Deuel.
  • 15. Of the tribe of Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.”
  • 16. These are the leaders of the tribes, the men who were called the heads of the families of their tribes. They were the clan leaders of Israel.
  • 17. Moses and Aaron summoned these men who had been appointed by name
  • 18. and they summoned the community on the first day of the second month. The Israelites registered, according to their families, as the LORD had commanded Moses. They were registered by name, one by one,
  • 19. from twenty years old and upward, as the LORD had commanded Moses. He did this in the Sinai desert.
  • 20. The total number of those who were registered, counted by their families, was as follows:
  • Of the tribe of Reuben, forty-six thousand five hundred were recorded.
  • 21. Of the tribe of Simeon, fifty-nine thousand three hundred were recorded.
  • 22. Of the tribe of Gad, forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty were registered.
  • 23. Of the tribe of Judah, seventy-four thousand six hundred were registered.
  • 24. Of the tribe of Issachar, fifty-four thousand four hundred were recorded.
  • 25. Of the tribe of Zebulun, fifty-seven thousand four hundred were recorded.
  • 26. Of the tribe of Ephraim, forty thousand five hundred were registered.
  • 27. Of the tribe of Manasseh, thirty-two thousand two hundred were registered.
  • 28. Of the tribe of Benjamin, thirty-five thousand four hundred were registered.
  • 29. Of the tribe of Dan, sixty-two thousand seven hundred were registered.
  • 30. Of the tribe of Asher, forty-one thousand five hundred were registered.
  • 31. Of the tribe of Naphtali, fifty-three thousand four hundred were registered.
  • 32. These were those who were recorded by Moses and Aaron and by the leaders of Israel, who were summoned by their families, according to the houses of their ancestors.
  • 33. The Levites, however, were not registered among the other Israelites, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  • 34. So the Israelites did as the LORD had commanded Moses. They encamped around the tent of meeting, marching, each according to his division and his standard.
  • 35. Likewise, the Israelites marched, each according to his division and his standard, under the direction of Moses and Aaron.
  • 36. And these are the descendants of Coate, by their families: Amram, Izar, Hebron and Uziel; and the years of Coate's life were one hundred and thirty-three years.
  • 37. The descendants of Merari, by their families, were Mali and Musi; These are the clans of Levi according to their families.
  • 38. And Amram took Jochebed his sister to wife, and she bore him Aaron and Moses; and the years of Amram's life were one hundred and thirty-seven years.
  • 39. And the sons of Korah were Assir, Elkanah, and Abiasaph; these are the clans of the Korahites.
  • 40. And Aaron took Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab, sister of Nasom, to wife; and she bore him Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
  • 41. And the sons of Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD, when they brought strange fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai; and they had no children; and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered before the face of Aaron their father.
  • 42. And these are the registered of the children of Israel, six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty.
  • 43. But the Levites were not registered among the children of Israel, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
  • 44. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
  • 45. Take the Levites for the firstborn of the children of Israel; and the Levites shall serve in place of all the firstborn of the children of Israel.
  • 46. And Moses gave the Levites to Aaron and his sons; according to the commandment of the LORD, by the hand of Moses.
  • 47. And this is what concerns the Levites: from the age of a month and upwards, you shall take their number by their families, and the number of their names.
  • 48. And they shall be with thee, and shall do the service of the tent of meeting, for all the service of the tent; and no stranger will come near to you.
  • 49. So you made the Levites a gift to Aaron and his sons; from among the children of Israel, to minister to the children of Israel in the tent of meeting, and to make atonement for the children of Israel; that there be no plague among the children of Israel, when the children of Israel approach the sanctuary.
  • 50. And Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel did to the Levites according to all that the LORD commanded Moses concerning the Levites; so did the children of Israel to them.
  • 51. And the Levites purified themselves, and washed their clothes; and Aaron waved them for an offering before the LORD, and made atonement for them, to purify them.
  • 52. And after that the Levites went in, to do their service in the tent of meeting, before Aaron and before his sons; as the LORD had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so they did to them.
  • 53. And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
  • 54. Take a census of the Levites, according to their fathers' houses, according to their families; You shall tell every male from a month old and upward.
