God's Promise to David

  • 1. David was already established in his palace, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around.
  • 2. One day he said to the prophet Nathan: “See, I am living in a palace of cedar, but the ark of God is sheltered in a simple tent.”
  • 3. Nathan answered the king, “Do what is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.”
  • 4. That same night, the Lord spoke to Nathan:
  • 5. “Go tell my servant David, thus says the Lord: Will you build me an house, that I may dwell in it?
  • 6. Since the day I brought the Israelites out of Egypt, I have never lived in a house. I have gone from tent to tent, from tabernacle to tabernacle.
  • 7. In all the times I walked with the Israelites, I once asked some leader, whom I appointed as shepherd of my people Israel: 'Why didn't you build me a house of cedar?'
  • 8. “Now tell my servant David: This is what the Lord Almighty says: 'I took you from the fields where you tended sheep to be leader of my people Israel.
  • 9. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have eliminated all your enemies. I will make you a great name, like the great men of the earth.
  • 10. I will provide a place for my people Israel and plant them there so that they will have their own home and will no longer be disturbed. The wicked people will no longer oppress them, as in the past,
  • 11. from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. I will subdue all your enemies. Furthermore, the Lord declares that he will give him a lasting dynasty.
  • 12. When the end of your days comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will choose one of your sons to succeed you, a fruit of your own body, and I will establish his kingdom.
  • 13. He will be responsible for building a house in honor of my name, and I will establish his throne forever.
  • 14. I will be a father to him, and he will be a son to me. When he makes a mistake, I will punish his mistakes with a rod, as is done to men.
  • 15. But I will never withdraw my love from him, as I did with Saul, whom I removed from his path.
  • 16. As for you, your dynasty and your kingdom will remain before me forever; your throne will be established forever'.”

David's Prayer

  • 17. Then Nathan reported to David everything that the Lord had said to him.
  • 18. David entered the tabernacle, sat before the Lord and prayed: “Who am I, O Sovereign Lord, and what is my family that you have brought me to this point?
  • 19. However, this is only a small part of the wonders you have done, O Sovereign Lord! You also talked about the future of my family. Is this what you do to men, O Sovereign Lord?
  • 20. “What more can I tell you, Lord? You know your servant, O Sovereign Lord.
  • 21. For the sake of your word and according to your will, you made these great promises and revealed them to your servant.
  • 22. How great you are, O Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you, nor is there any other God besides you, according to all we have heard.
  • 23. And what nation on earth is like your people Israel, the only nation that you redeemed for yourself, making them a people for yourself, and making your name famous by performing great and awesome deeds, by driving out nations and their gods before your people, whom you rescued from Egypt?
  • 24. You established Israel as your people forever, and you, O Lord, became their God.
  • 25. “Now, Lord God, confirm forever the promise you made to your servant and to his descendants. Do as you promised,
  • 26. so that your name may be exalted forever, and people will say, 'The Lord of hosts is the God of Israel!' And the house of your servant David will stand before you.
  • 27. You, Lord of hosts, God of Israel, revealed this to your servant, saying, 'I will establish a dynasty for you.' Therefore, your servant found the courage to pray this prayer to you.
  • 28. O Sovereign Lord, you are God! Your words are true, and you have fulfilled this good promise to your servant.
  • 29. Now bless the family of your servant, so that they may remain in your presence forever. You, O Sovereign Lord, promised it! And with your blessing, your servant’s family will be blessed forever.”
