The ark is brought to Jerusalem

  • 1. David again gathered Israel's best warriors, a total of thirty thousand men.
  • 2. They set out for Baalah in Judah with the aim of bringing the ark of God, the ark that is called by the Name of the Lord of hosts, whose throne is between the cherubim that guard it.
  • 3. They loaded the ark of God into a new cart and took it from Abinadab's house, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, drove the chariot.
  • 4. Uzzah walked in front of the ark of God.
  • 5. David and all the people of Israel sang and danced before the Lord, to the sound of all kinds of stringed instruments: harps, lutes, tambourines, bells and cymbals.
  • 6. When they reached the threshing floor of Nahm, Uzzah stretched out his hand to hold the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled.
  • 7. The Lord was angry with Uzzah for his irreverent attitude. And God struck him, and Uzzah died right there, next to the ark of God.
  • 8. David was upset because the Lord, in his anger, had struck Uzzah. To this day, that place is called Perez-Uzá.
  • 9. That day David was afraid of the Lord and asked himself, “How can I take the ark of the Lord for myself?”
  • 10. Therefore, he gave up taking the ark of the Lord to the City of David. Instead, he took her to the house of Obed-edom in Gath.
  • 11. The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom for three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and his entire household.
  • 12. Then they said to King David, “The Lord has blessed the family of Obed-edom and everything he has because of the ark of God.” David then happily went to the house of Obed-Edom and ordered them to bring the ark of God to the City of David.
  • 13. While those carrying the ark of the Lord took six steps, David offered an ox and a fatted calf as a sacrifice.
  • 14. David, dressed in a linen priestly vest, danced with all his strength before the Lord.
  • 15. He and all the people of Israel carried the ark of the Lord with joy, with the sound of shouts and trumpets.
  • 16. When the ark of the Lord entered the City of David, Michal, Saul's daughter, was looking out of the window. When she saw King David dancing and celebrating before the Lord, she despised him in her heart.
  • 17. They brought the ark of the Lord and placed it in the tent that David had prepared. David offered burnt offerings and communion sacrifices before the Lord.
  • 18. When he had finished offering the burnt offerings and the communion sacrifices, David blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts.
  • 19. He distributed to each Israelite man and woman a loaf of bread, a date cake, and a raisin cake. Then all the people returned to their homes.
  • 20. When David returned to bless his family, Michal, Saul's daughter, came out to meet him and rebuked him, saying: “How the king of Israel has debased himself today, stripping himself naked before his servants' maidservants, like any common man. !”.
  • 21. David answered Michal, “It was before the Lord that I danced, before him who chose me in place of his father and all his family, and appointed me as leader over the people of the Lord, over Israel. And before the Lord I will continue to rejoice,
  • 22. and I will humble myself even more in my own esteem. But I will be honored by the servants you spoke of.”
  • 23. And Michal, Saul's daughter, had no children until the day of her death.
