David reigns over Israel

  • 1. The representatives of all the tribes of Israel came to David in Hebron and said, “We are of the same lineage as you, O king.
  • 2. Even when Saul was our king, it was you who led Israel in battle. The Lord revealed to you: 'You will be the shepherd of Israel, my people, and you will rule over them' ".
  • 3. Then all the authorities of Israel went to meet King David in Hebron. There, before the Lord, they made a covenant with David and anointed him king of Israel.
  • 4. David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.
  • 5. For seven years and a half he ruled Judah in Hebron, and in Jerusalem he ruled over all Israel and Judah for thirty-three years.

David conquers Jerusalem

  • 6. King David and his soldiers marched to Jerusalem to fight the Jebusites who lived there. The Jebusites said to David, “You will not be able to get in here! Even the blind and crippled can defeat us.” They believed that David would not be able to enter.
  • 7. However, David conquered the stronghold of Zion and turned it into the City of David.
  • 8. On that day, David said, "Anyone who wants to defeat the Jebusites will have to go through the waterway and attack the blind and crippled, David's enemies." And that's why it is said: "The 'blind and the lame' shall not enter the palace".
  • 9. David settled in the fortress and called it the City of David. He also built fortifications around it from Milo.
  • 10. And David became more and more powerful, for the Lord, the God of hosts, was with him.
  • 11. A short time later, Hiram, the king of Tyre, sent messengers to David, bringing him cedar wood, as well as carpenters and masons, who built a palace for David.
  • 12. Then David realized that the Lord had established him as king of Israel and that his kingdom was flourishing because of his people Israel.
  • 13. After moving from Hebron to Jerusalem, David took more concubines and wives and had more sons and daughters.
  • 14. These are the names of the sons who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,
  • 15. Ibar, Elisua, Nepheg, Jafia,
  • 16. Elisama, Eliada and Eliphelet.

David defeats the Philistines

  • 17. As soon as the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king of Israel, they came with all their army to capture him. However, David heard about it and went to the stronghold.
  • 18. The Philistines spread through the Valley of Rephaim.
  • 19. David then inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?” The Lord replied, "Go, for I will give you the Philistines."
  • 20. David went to Baal-perazim and there defeated the Philistines. He said, "As the waters of a flood cause destruction, the Lord destroyed my enemies before me." And so the place came to be called Baal-perazim.
  • 21. The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his soldiers took them.
  • 22. Again the Philistines invaded the Valley of Rephaim.
  • 23. Then David inquired of the Lord again, and he replied, “Do not attack directly; go around behind them and attack them in front of the mulberry trees.
  • 24. When you hear the sound of footsteps in the tops of the mulberry trees, move quickly, for that will be a sign that the Lord is going ahead of you to defeat the Philistine army.”
  • 25. David did as the Lord had commanded and defeated the Philistines from Gibeon to Gezer.
