David's last words

  • 1. These are David's last words: “The words of David, son of Jesse; words of the exalted man, the one anointed by the God of Jacob, the singer of the songs of Israel:
  • 2. “The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me; His word was on my tongue.
  • 3. The God of Israel spoke, the Rock of Israel said to me: 'He who rules the people with justice, he who rules in the fear of God,
  • 4. It is like the morning light at sunrise, on a cloudless morning. It's like the light after the rain, which makes the plants of the earth grow'.
  • 5. “My dynasty is in harmony with God. He has established an eternal covenant with me, firm and secure in all respects. It will certainly make me prosper and grant all my desires.
  • 6. But the wicked will be thrown away like thorns, which cannot be touched with hands;
  • 7. Whoever tries to touch them uses a tool or the wooden handle of a spear. The thorns will be completely burned wherever they are.”

David's Great Military Leaders

  • 8. These are the names of David's chief warriors: Jabeson, a Tahcmonite, was the chief of the three chief warriors; on one occasion, with a spear, he faced eight hundred men in a single battle and defeated them.
  • 9. After him, Eleazar, son of Dodo, the Ahohite. He was one of the three chief warriors and was with David when the Philistines gathered at Pas-Damim for battle. The Israelites retreated,
  • 10. But Eleazar stood his ground and struck down the Philistines until his hand grew tired and stuck to his sword. The Lord granted a great victory to Israel that day, and the army returned only to plunder the dead.
  • 11. After him, Shamá, son of Agé, from Harar. The Philistines gathered at Lehi, where there was a lentil field. The army of Israel fled from the Philistines,
  • 12. But Shammah stood in the middle of the plantation, defended it and defeated the Philistines. The Lord granted him a great victory.
  • 13. During the harvest, three of the thirty chief warriors went to meet David in the cave of Adullam, while a group of Philistines were camped in the valley of Rephaim.
  • 14. While David was in his fortress and the Philistines were in Bethlehem,
  • 15. David expressed an intense desire: “I wish I could drink water from the cistern at the gate of Bethlehem!”
  • 16. Then those three warriors crossed the Philistine camp, drew water from the cistern and brought it to David. But he refused to drink; Instead, he poured it out as an offering to the Lord and said:
  • 17. “The Lord forbid I should drink this water! It would be like drinking the blood of the men who risked their lives to bring her!” And David did not drink that water. These were the deeds of the three main warriors.
  • 18. Abishai, brother of Joab and son of Zeruiah, was the leader of the thirty. Once, with his spear, he killed three hundred men and became as famous as the three main warriors.
  • 19. He was more honored than the thirty, but he never reached the same level as the main three.
  • 20. Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, was a valiant warrior from Kabzeel, who performed great deeds. He killed two of Moab's best warriors, and one snowy day he went down into a pit and killed a lion.
  • 21. He also killed an Egyptian of great stature. The Egyptian held a spear, and Benaiah faced him with a staff. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian's hand and killed him with it.
  • 22. These were the great deeds of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who also gained fame among David's three chief warriors.
  • 23. He was more honored than any of the thirty, but he never equaled the top three. And David put him in charge of his personal guard.
  • 24. Among the thirty were: Asahel, Joab's brother; Elanã, son of Dodô, of Bethlehem;
  • 25. Shamah and Elica from Harod;
  • 26. Helez of Pelom; Ira, son of Iques, of Tekoa;
  • 27. Abi-ezer, from Anathoth; Mebunai, from Husa;
  • 28. Zalmon, from Aoí; Maarai, from Netofa;
  • 29. Heled, son of Baanah, from Netofah; Ittai, son of Ribai, from Gibeah of Benjamin;
  • 30. Benaiah, from Piratom; Hidai, from the streams of Gaas;
  • 31. Abi-Albon, from Arabah; Azmavete, from Baurim;
  • 32. Eliaba of Saalbon; the sons of Jashem; Jonathan,
  • 33. son of Shamah, from Harar; Ahiam, son of Sarar, of Harar;
  • 34. Eliphelet, son of Ashbai, from Maacah; Eliam, son of Ahithophel, from Gilo;
  • 35. Hezrai, from Carmel; Paarai, from Arabic;
  • 36. Igal, son of Nathan, from Zobah; Bani of Gad;
  • 37. Zelek, from Ammon; Naarai of Beeroth, the squire of Joab son of Zeruiah;
  • 38. Wrath, by Jeter; Garebe, by Jeter;
  • 39. and the Hittite Uriah. In total, they were thirty-seven in number.
