Song of David

  • 1. David sang this song to the Lord when He delivered him from the hands of all his enemies and also from the hands of Saul, proclaiming:
  • 2. “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and deliverer;
  • 3. He is my God, my strength, in whom I take refuge; He is my shield and my mighty savior. He is my high tower, safe shelter. You, Lord, are my savior, delivering me from the violent.
  • 4. I cry out to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies.
  • 5. “The waves of death surrounded me; torrents of destruction terrified me.
  • 6. Ties of the grave have enveloped me; death traps confronted me.
  • 7. In my distress I cried out to the Lord; I called out to my God. From His temple He heard my voice; my cry reached His ears.
  • 8. “The earth shook and trembled, the foundations of the sky shook; they trembled at His wrath.
  • 9. Smoke came out of His nostrils; out of His mouth came consuming fire; live and flaming coals came out of Him.
  • 10. He opened the heavens and came down; dark clouds were beneath His feet.
  • 11. He rode a cherub and flew; He rose on the wings of the wind.
  • 12. He returned darkness around Him; from the dense rain clouds He made His hiding place.
  • 13. From the brightness of His presence blazing coals burst forth.
  • 14. From the heavens the Lord thundered; the voice of the Most High resounded.
  • 15. He shot arrows and scattered my enemies, hurled lightning and drove them back.
  • 16. The valleys were revealed, the foundations of the earth were uncovered, by the rebuke of the Lord, by the mighty breath of His nostrils.
  • 17. “From on high He stretched out His hand and held me; took me out of the deep waters.
  • 18. He delivered me from my powerful enemy, from adversaries who were stronger than me.
  • 19. They attacked me in the day of my trouble, but the Lord was my support.
  • 20. He gave me wide freedom; He delivered me, because he loves me.
  • 21. “The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the purity of my hands he rewarded me.
  • 22. Because I have kept the ways of the Lord; I have not turned aside to do evil against my God.
  • 23. All His commandments are before me; I have not departed from His ordinances.
  • 24. I have been blameless before Him and kept myself from sin.
  • 25. The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the purity of my hands before Him.
  • 26. “With the faithful, You show Yourself faithful; with the righteous, you show yourself righteous.
  • 27. With the pure, You show Yourself pure, but with the wicked, You show Yourself cunning.
  • 28. You save the humble, but the haughty Your eyes watch to humble them.
  • 29. You are my lamp, O Lord! The Lord illuminates my darkness.
  • 30. With you I can pursue an army; with my God, I can jump walls.
  • 31. “This is the God whose way is perfect; the word of the Lord is demonstrably true. He is a shield for all who take refuge in Him.
  • 32. For who is God besides the Lord? Who is Rock if not our God?
  • 33. It is God who gives me strength and makes my path perfect.
  • 34. He makes me run like a swift gazelle and establishes me on high places.
  • 35. It is He who trains me for battle, and my arms bend the bronze bow.
  • 36. You give me Your shield of salvation; Your help has made me strong.
  • 37. You widen my path under my feet, so that my ankles do not stumble.
  • 38. “I pursued my enemies and defeated them; I didn't return until they were destroyed.
  • 39. I crushed them completely, with no chance of them getting up; fell under my feet.
  • 40. You have given me strength for battle; my adversaries have fallen before me.
  • 41. I made my enemies flee from me; I destroyed those who hated me.
  • 42. They cried out for help, but there was no one to save them; They cried out to the Lord, but He did not answer.
  • 43. I reduced them to dust, like the dust of the earth; I crushed them and kneaded them like street mud.
  • 44. “You delivered me from the uprisings of my people; you preserved me as leader of the nations. A people I never knew became my servant.
  • 45. Foreigners bow down to me; when they hear me, they obey me.
  • 46. They lose courage, they leave their strongholds trembling.
  • 47. “The Lord lives! Blessed be my Rock! Exalted be God, the Rock that saves me!
  • 48. It is He who executes vengeance on my behalf, subjects nations to me,
  • 49. deliver me from my enemies. You exalt me above the aggressors; free me from violent men.
  • 50. Therefore I will praise You, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing praises to Your name.
  • 51. He grants great victories to His king; He is kind to His anointed, to David and his descendants forever.”
