David learns of Saul's death

  • 1. After Saul's death, David returned from his victory over the Amalekites. He had been in Ziklag for two days
  • 2. when, on the third day, a man arrived from Saul's camp, with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. He approached David and prostrated himself with his face to the ground, as a sign of respect.
  • 3. David asked, “Where do you come from?” The man replied, “I escaped from the camp of Israel.”
  • 4. David said, “Tell me what happened.” And the man said: “Our army was defeated in battle, and many died. Saul and Jonathan are also dead.”
  • 5. Then David asked the young man who had brought the news, “How do you know that Saul and Jonathan are dead?”
  • 6. The young man replied, “By chance I came to Mount Gilboa and there was Saul leaning on his spear. The chariots and horsemen were about to overtake him.
  • 7. When he saw me, he called me and I replied, 'Here I am.'
  • 8. “He asked, 'Who are you?' “I am an Amalekite,” I replied.
  • 9. “Then he ordered me, 'Come here and kill me! I am suffering and about to die.'
  • 10. “So I approached him and killed him, because I knew he would not survive his injuries. I took his crown and bracelet and brought them to you, my lord.”
  • 11. Then David tore his clothes, and the men who were with him did the same.
  • 12. They mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul, Jonathan, for the army of the Lord and for the people of Israel, because many had been killed by the sword.
  • 13. David asked the young man who had brought the news, “Where are you from?” And he replied: “I am the son of a foreigner, I am an Amalekite.”
  • 14. David asked him, “How come you were not afraid to lift your hand to kill the Lord’s anointed?”
  • 15. Then David called one of his soldiers and said, “Come here and kill him!” The soldier wounded him, and the man died.
  • 16. David said to the young man, “You are responsible for your own death. Your mouth testified against you when it said, 'I have killed the Lord's anointed.'

Song of David about the death of Saul and Jonathan

  • 17. David sang this lament for Saul and his son Jonathan,
  • 18. and ordered them to teach it to the men of Judah; is the Lament of the Bow, recorded in the Book of Jasher:
  • 19. “Your splendor, O Israel, lies dead upon your hills. How the warriors fell!
  • 20. “Do not proclaim it in Gath, do not proclaim it in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised rejoice.
  • 21. “O mountains of Gilboa, never again have dew or rain on you, nor fields that produce grain for offerings. For there the shield of the warriors was profaned, the shield of Saul, which will never be anointed with oil.
  • 22. From the blood of warriors, from the fat of the strong, Jonathan's bow never returned empty, Saul's sword never returned bloodless.
  • 23. “Saul and Jonathan, so loved, were neither separated in life nor in death. They were faster than eagles, stronger than lions.
  • 24. “Weep for Saul, O daughters of Israel! Lament the one who clothed you in scarlet robes, who adorned his garments with ornaments of gold.
  • 25. “How the warriors fell in the midst of battle! Jonathan lies dead on the mountains of Israel.
  • 26. How distressed I am for you, Jonathan my brother! How dear you were to me! Your friendship was more precious to me than the love of women!
  • 27. “The warriors have fallen! The weapons of war have been destroyed!”
