  • 1. During the reign of Jehoiachin, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, invaded the land. Joachim became his vassal for three years, but later rebelled against him.
  • 2. The Lord sent Babylonian, Aramean, Moabite and Ammonite troops against Jehoiachin to destroy Judah, according to the word of the Lord spoken by his servants, the prophets.
  • 3. This happened to Judah according to the command of the Lord, in order to remove the people from his presence, because of all the sins that Manasseh had committed,
  • 4. including the shedding of innocent blood. For Manasseh had filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the Lord would not forgive.
  • 5. The other events of Jehoiachin's reign and all his achievements are recorded in the Book of the Kings of Judah.
  • 6. Jehoiachin rested with his ancestors, and his son Jehoiakim was his successor.
  • 7. The king of Egypt no longer left his land, for the king of Babylon conquered everything that belonged to the king of Egypt, from the river of Egypt to the river Euphrates.

Jeconiah is king of Judah

  • 8. Jehoiakim was eighteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem for three months. His mother's name was Neusta, daughter of Elnathan; she was from Jerusalem.
  • 9. He did what was evil before the Lord, just as his father had done.
  • 10. At that time, the servants of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, advanced against Jerusalem and the city was surrounded.
  • 11. Nebuchadnezzar himself came to the city while his servants were besieging it.
  • 12. Then Jehoiakim king of Judah, his mother, his counselors, his officers, and his eunuchs surrendered to the king of Babylon. They surrendered, and so the king of Babylon took them prisoner.
  • 13. He took with him all the treasures of the temple of the Lord and the treasures of the royal palace. He broke all the golden utensils that Solomon, king of Israel, had made for the temple of the Lord.
  • 14. And he also took as captives all the people of Jerusalem, all the leaders and all the mighty men, ten thousand captives in all, besides all the craftsmen and blacksmiths. No one stayed, except the poorest in the country.
  • 15. He took Jehoiakim captive to Babylon, as well as the king's mother, the king's wives, his officials, and the leaders of the land.
  • 16. And the king of Babylon also took into exile seven thousand chosen men, brave and skillful, besides a thousand craftsmen and blacksmiths, all of them strong warriors fit for battle.
  • 17. Then the king of Babylon made Mattaniah, Jehoiakim's uncle, reign in his place, changing his name to Zedekiah.

Zedekiah is king of Judah

  • 18. Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Hamutal, daughter of Jeremiah; she was from Libnah.
  • 19. He did what was evil before the Lord, just as Jehoiakim had done.
  • 20. Because of the anger of the Lord, all this happened in Jerusalem and in Judah, until he drove them away from his presence. And so Jerusalem was finally exiled. Zedekiah's rebellion against the king of Babylon caused all of this.
