The book of the law is found

  • 1. In those days Josiah was only eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned for thirty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jedida, daughter of Adaiah, of Bozcate.
  • 2. He did what was pleasing in the sight of the Lord and followed the ways of his predecessor David, turning neither to the right nor to the left.
  • 3. In the eighteenth year of his reign, King Josiah sent the secretary Shaphan, son of Azaliah and grandson of Meshullam, to the temple of the Lord, saying:
  • 4. “Go to the high priest Hilkiah and ask him to gather the silver that was brought to the temple of the Lord, which the guards at the gates collected from the people.
  • 5. This silver will be given to the supervisors in charge of restoring the temple, to pay the workers who are carrying out repairs on the temple of the Lord:
  • 6. carpenters, builders and bricklayers. In addition, it will be used to buy wood and carved stones for repairs to the temple.
  • 7. However, they will not need to account for the money entrusted to them, as they are acting honestly.”
  • 8. Then the high priest Hilkiah said to Shaphan the secretary, “I have found the Book of the Law in the temple of the Lord.” And he gave the book to Shaphan, who read it.
  • 9. Secretary Shaphan returned to the king and gave him the report, saying: “Your servants collected the silver that was in the temple and gave it to the supervisors and workers in charge of restoring the temple.”
  • 10. And Shaphan added, “Hilkiah the high priest gave me this book.” And Shaphan read the book to the king.
  • 11. As soon as the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his clothes.
  • 12. Then he gave the following orders to Hilkiah the priest, Ahicam son of Shaphan, Achbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the secretary, and Asaiah the royal assistant:
  • 13. “Go and inquire of the Lord for me, for the people, and for all Judah concerning the words of this book that was found. The anger of the Lord must be great against us, because our ancestors did not obey the words of this book nor act in accordance with everything that is written about us.”
  • 14. Then the priest Hilkiah, Ahikam, Acbor, Shaphan and Asaiah went to speak to the prophetess Huldah, wife of Shallum, son of Tikvah and grandson of Harash, who was responsible for the wardrobe. She lived in the new neighborhood of Jerusalem.
  • 15. She said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 'Say to the man who sent you to me:
  • 16. Thus says the Lord: I will bring disaster on this place and on its inhabitants, as it is written in the book that the king of Judah read.
  • 17. For they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, and have provoked my wrath with all that their hands have done, kindling my wrath against this place, so that it will not be quenched.'
  • 18. Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the Lord: This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says about the words you heard:
  • 19. 'Since your heart was humbled and you repented before the Lord when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants, who would be cursed and destroyed, and since you tore your clothes and wept before me , I have also heard,' declares the Lord.
  • 20. 'Therefore I will gather you to your ancestors, and you will be buried in peace. Your eyes will not see all the misfortune I will bring upon this place.'” So they took the answer to the king.
