Azariah is king of Judah

  • 1. In the twenty-seventh year of the reign of Jeroboam king of Israel, Azariah son of Amaziah began to reign as king of Judah.
  • 2. He was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for fifty-two years. His mother was from Jerusalem and her name was Jecoliah.
  • 3. Azariah did what was pleasing in the eyes of the Lord, just like his father Amaziah.
  • 4. However, the idolatrous altars were not torn down; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense in them.
  • 5. The Lord struck the king with leprosy, and he remained with that disease until the day of his death. All this time he lived in a separate house. Jotham, his son, took care of the palace and governed the people.
  • 6. The other events of Azariah's reign and all his achievements are recorded in the annals of the kings of Judah.
  • 7. Azariah rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David. His son Jotham was his successor on the throne.

Zechariah is king of Israel

  • 8. In the thirty-eighth year of the reign of Azariah king of Judah, Zechariah son of Jeroboam began to reign as king of Israel in Samaria. He reigned only six months.
  • 9. He did what was evil before the Lord, just as his predecessors had done. He did not turn away from the sins that Jeroboam, son of Nebat, led Israel to commit.
  • 10. Shallum son of Jabesh plotted against Zechariah, attacked him before the people and murdered him. Shallum then assumed the throne as his successor.
  • 11. The other events of Zechariah's reign are recorded in the annals of the kings of Israel.
  • 12. Thus was fulfilled the word of the Lord that had been spoken to Jehu, saying: “Your sons to the fourth generation will sit on the throne of Israel.”

Shallum is king of Israel

  • 13. Shallum son of Jabesh began to reign in the thirty-eighth year of the reign of Uzziah king of Judah, and he reigned only one month in Samaria.
  • 14. Then Menahem son of Gadi went from Tirzah to Samaria, murdered Shallum, and took the throne as his successor.
  • 15. The rest of the events of Shallum's reign and the conspiracy he led are recorded in the annals of the kings of Israel.

Menahem is king of Israel

  • 16. At that time Menahem departed from Tirzah and attacked Typhsha and all who were in the city and around it, because they refused to open the city gates. He plundered Tifsa and chopped up all the pregnant women.
  • 17. In the thirty-ninth year of the reign of Azariah king of Judah, Menahem son of Gadi became king of Israel in Samaria and reigned ten years.
  • 18. He did what was evil before the Lord. During his entire reign, he did not turn away from the sins that Jeroboam, son of Nebat, led Israel to commit.
  • 19. Then Pul king of Assyria invaded the land, and Menahem gave Pul thirty-five tons of silver to gain his support and keep himself on the throne.
  • 20. Menahem demanded this money from all the rich men of Israel, demanding that they contribute almost a pound of silver each. He used this silver to pay the king of Assyria. Pul then withdrew his support and left the country.
  • 21. The other events of Menahem's reign and all his achievements are recorded in the annals of the kings of Israel.
  • 22. Menahem rested with his ancestors, and his son Pekaiah was his successor.

Pekaiah is king of Israel

  • 23. In the fiftieth year of the reign of Azariah king of Judah, Pekaiah son of Menahem became king of Israel in Samaria and reigned for two years.
  • 24. Pekaiah did evil in the sight of the Lord and did not turn away from the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat led Israel to commit.
  • 25. One of his officers, Pekah son of Remaliah, conspired against him and murdered Pekaiah, together with Argob and Arie, in the castle of the royal palace in Samaria. Then Pekah became Pekaiah's successor as king.
  • 26. The other events of Pekaiah's reign and all his achievements are recorded in the annals of the kings of Israel.

Pekah is king of Israel

  • 27. In the fifty-second year of the reign of Azariah king of Judah, Pekah son of Remaliah began to reign as king of Israel in Samaria. He reigned for twenty years.
  • 28. Peca did what was evil before the Lord. During his entire reign, he did not turn away from the sins that Jeroboam, son of Nebat, led Israel to commit.
  • 29. During his reign, Tiglath-Pileser, king of Assyria, invaded and conquered Ijom, Abel-Beth-Maacah, Janoah, Kedesh and Hazor. He also took all of Galilee and all the land of Naphtali and deported the people to Assyria.
  • 30. Then Hosea son of Elah plotted against Pekah son of Remaliah. He attacked and murdered him, becoming his successor in the twentieth year of the reign of Jotham son of Uzziah.
  • 31. The other events of Pekah's reign and all his achievements are recorded in the annals of the kings of Israel.

Jotham is king of Judah

  • 32. In the second year of the reign of Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel, Jotham son of Uzziah king of Judah began to reign.
  • 33. Jotham was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jerusa, daughter of Zadok.
  • 34. He did what was pleasing in the eyes of the Lord, just like his father Uzziah.
  • 35. However, the idolatrous altars were not torn down; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense in them. Jotham rebuilt the upper door of the temple of the Lord.
  • 36. The other events of Jotham's reign and all his achievements are recorded in the annals of the kings of Judah.
  • 37. In those days the Lord began to send Rezin king of Syria and Pekah son of Remaliah against Judah.
  • 38. Jotham rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David. His son Ahaz was his successor on the throne.
