Solomon performs his duties

  • 1. Twenty years have passed since the construction of the Lord's temple and the royal palace began,
  • 2. Solomon rebuilt the cities that Hiram had given him and settled the Israelites in them.
  • 3. He also attacked Hamath-Zobah and conquered it.
  • 4. He also rebuilt Tadmor in the desert and all the storage cities he had built in Hamath.
  • 5. He rebuilt the fortified cities of Upper Bethhoron and Lower Bethhoron, with their walls, gates and locks,
  • 6. as well as Baalath and all its storage cities, the cities where his chariots and horses were. Solomon built everything he wanted in Jerusalem, Lebanon and all the territory under his rule.
  • 7. All the peoples who were not Israelites, that is, the Hittites, Amorites, Phoerezeites, Hivites and Jebusites, who were still left in the land,
  • 8. Solomon recruited them for forced labor, as is still done today.
  • 9. However, Solomon didn't make the Israelites slaves for his work; they were his soldiers, leaders of his war commanders, captains of his chariots and horsemen.
  • 10. They were also the heads of government appointed by King Solomon, two hundred and fifty officials responsible for overseeing the work of the people.
  • 11. Solomon brought Pharaoh's daughter from the City of David to the palace he had built for her, for he said, "My wife must not live in the palace of David, king of Israel, for the places where the ark of the Lord passed are holy."
  • 12. Solomon offered burnt offerings on the altar of the Lord that he had built in front of the portico,
  • 13. by keeping the ordinances of Moses for the daily sacrifices, for the Sabbaths, the new moons and the set feasts, according to what is written in the Law of the Lord.
  • 14. And he appointed the priests to their duties, according to the division established by his father David, and the Levites to lead the praise and assist the priests, as was determined. He also appointed the gatekeepers to their positions at the various gates, according to what David, the man of God, had commanded.
  • 15. The king's orders to the priests and Levites, including those relating to the treasuries, were carried out as established.
  • 16. So all Solomon's work, from laying the foundations of the temple of the Lord to its completion, was done. The temple of the Lord was finished.
  • 17. Solomon then went to Ezion-Geber and Elath, on the coast of Edom.
  • 18. And Hiram sent him ships with experienced sailors, men who knew the sea. They sailed with Solomon's sailors to Ophir and brought back fifteen thousand seven hundred and fifty kilos of gold for King Solomon.
