Solomon builds the temple

  • 1. Then Solomon began to build the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem, on Mount Moriah, where the Lord had appeared to his father David, on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, a place that had been provided by David.
  • 2. Construction began on the second day of the second month of the fourth year of his reign.
  • 3. The foundations that Solomon laid for the temple of God were twenty-seven meters long and nine meters wide by ancient measurement.
  • 4. The portico at the entrance to the temple was nine meters wide and nine meters high. He coated its interior with pure gold.
  • 5. He covered the main hall with pine, covered it with pure gold and decorated it with designs of date palms and chains.
  • 6. He decorated the temple with precious stones. The gold used was from Parvaim.
  • 7. He also overlaid the beams of the ceiling, the frames, the walls and the doors of the temple with gold, and carved cherubim on the walls.
  • 8. He made the Most Holy Place, nine meters long and nine meters wide, equal to the width of the temple. Its interior was coated with twenty-one tons of pure gold.
  • 9. The gold nails weighed six hundred grams. He also covered the upper rooms with gold.
  • 10. In the Most Holy Place he carved and overlaid two cherubim with gold,
  • 11. which, with their wings open, measured nine meters together. Each wing, measuring two meters and twenty-five centimeters, touched, on one side, the wall of the temple.
  • 12. and, on the other side, on the wing of the other cherub.
  • 13. So the cherubim, with wings stretching thirty feet, stood facing the main court.
  • 14. He made the veil of blue, purple, and red cloth and fine linen, with cherubim drawn on it.
  • 15. He made two columns in front of the temple, which together were sixteen meters long, each having on top a capital measuring two meters and twenty-five centimeters.
  • 16. He made intertwined chains and placed them on top of the pillars. He also made a hundred pomegranates and placed them on the chains.
  • 17. Then he set up the pillars in front of the temple, one on the south, one on the north; He named the one to the south Jachin and the one to the north Boaz.
