Jehoram is king of Judah

  • 1. Jehoram rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings. His son Ahaziah was his successor.
  • 2. Ahaziah's brothers, the sons of Jehoram, were Azariah, Jeiel, Zechariah, Azariah, Michael and Shephatiah. They were all sons of Jehoram, king of Israel.
  • 3. Their father gave them many gifts of silver, gold and valuable objects, as well as fortified cities in Judah. However, the kingdom he gave to Ahaziah, because he was his youngest son.
  • 4. Ahaziah strengthened himself in his father's kingdom and killed all his brothers with the sword, as well as some of the leaders of Israel.
  • 5. He was forty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned only one year in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Athaliah and she was the daughter of Omri.
  • 6. Ahaziah followed the paths of the kings of Israel, as his mother advised him to practice idolatry. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord.
  • 7. However, the Lord did not allow David's dynasty to be destroyed, because of the covenant he had made with David and because he had promised to give him and his descendants a lamp forever.
  • 8. During the reign of Ahaziah, Edom revolted against the rule of Judah and proclaimed its own king.
  • 9. Ahaziah then set out with his officers and all his chariots to confront the Edomites who had surrounded him. But during the night he attacked them and managed to break the siege.
  • 10. Thus Edom became independent of Judah to this day. At this same time, Libnah also revolted against the rule of Ahaziah, as he had abandoned the Lord, the God of his ancestors.
  • 11. Furthermore, Ahaziah built idolatrous altars in the mountains of Judah and led the people of Jerusalem into spiritual prostitution, causing Judah to turn away from the Lord.
  • 12. Then Elijah the prophet sent a letter to Ahaziah, which said: “This is what the Lord, the God of David your father, says: Because you have not followed the ways of Jehoshaphat your father, nor the ways of Asa , king of Judah,
  • 13. but rather the ways of the kings of Israel, leading Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem into spiritual prostitution, as the family of Ahab did, and because you killed your brothers, your father's family, who were better than you,
  • 14. the Lord will send a great punishment on your people, your children, your wives and all your possessions.
  • 15. You yourself will be stricken with a serious intestinal illness, which will worsen day by day, until your intestines leave the body' “.
  • 16. Then the Lord stirred up the hostility of the Philistines and the Arabs who lived near the Ethiopians against Ahaziah.
  • 17. They invaded Judah, plundered the royal palace, and took with them all their wealth, including their wives and children. Only Ahaziah, the youngest son, escaped unharmed.
  • 18. After all this, the Lord afflicted Ahaziah with an incurable disease in his intestines.
  • 19. The illness worsened day by day, until, at the end of the second year, his intestines came out due to the severity of the illness. And Ahaziah died in intense pain. No one held a funeral in his honor, as was done for his ancestors.
  • 20. Ahaziah was forty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned only one year in Jerusalem. He was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings. And no one mourned his death.
