David in Adullam and Mizpah

  • 1. David fled the city of Gath and took refuge in the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and his father's family heard about this, they went to find him.
  • 2. Furthermore, all who were distressed, in debt, and dissatisfied joined him, and he became their leader. There were about four hundred men.
  • 3. From there David went to Mizpah in Moab and said to the king of Moab, “Can I let my father and mother stay here until I know what God has in store for me?”
  • 4. Then David left them with the king of Moab, and they remained there while David took refuge in the fortress.

Saul kills the priests of Nob

  • 5. However, the prophet Gad said to David, “Do not stay in the stronghold. Go to Judah.” So David went to the forest of Hereth.
  • 6. Saul heard that David and his men had been found. Saul was sitting under a tamarisk tree, holding his spear, with all his officers around him.
  • 7. He said to them, “Listen, men of Benjamin! Will the son of Jesse give land and vineyards to all of you? Will he make you commanders of thousands and hundreds?
  • 8. Did you conspire against me? No one informs me when my own son makes a deal with Jesse's son. Do none of you care about me or warn me that my son is plotting against me today?”
  • 9. Then Doeg the Edomite, who was with Saul's officers, said, “I saw the son of Jesse in Nob, meeting with Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.
  • 10. Ahimelech inquired of God for him and gave him food and the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”
  • 11. Then the king sent for Ahimelech son of Ahitub and all his family, who were priests in Nob, and they came to the king.
  • 12. Saul said to Ahimelech, “Listen, son of Ahitub.” He replied, “Yes, my lord.”
  • 13. Saul said to him, “Why did you conspire against me, you and the son of Jesse? Did you give him food and a sword, and consulted God so that he would rebel against me and lie in wait for me, as you are doing today?”
  • 14. Ahimelech answered the king, “Who is more loyal to you than David, your son-in-law and commander of your bodyguard? He is honored in his house.
  • 15. Was this the first time I consulted God for him? Certainly not! Do not accuse your servant or anyone in my father’s family, for I had no knowledge of any of this.”
  • 16. Then the king said, “You will surely die, Ahimelech, as will all your family.”
  • 17. And the king commanded the guards who were at his side: “Slay the priests of the Lord, for they are also supporting David. They knew he was running away, but they didn’t inform me.” But the king's officials refused to lift their hands to kill the Lord's priests.
  • 18. Then the king ordered Doeg: “Kill the priests.” And Doeg killed them. That day he killed eighty-five men wearing priestly robes.
  • 19. Furthermore, Saul ordered to kill all the inhabitants of Nob, the city of the priests: men, women, children, newborns, oxen, donkeys and sheep.
  • 20. However, Abiathar, son of Ahimelech and grandson of Ahitub, managed to escape and flee to join David.
  • 21. He informed David that Saul had killed the Lord's priests.
  • 22. Then David said to Abiathar, “I knew that the Edomite Doeg would not fail to inform Saul. I'm responsible for the death of your father's entire family.
  • 23. Stay with me, don't be afraid. He who is seeking to take your life is also seeking to take mine. You will be safe with me.”
