Saul saves the city of Jabesh

  • 1. The Ammonite Nahash marched against the city of Jabesh-gilead and surrounded it. Jabesh’s men said to him, “We will make a treaty with you and submit.”
  • 2. However, Nahash the Ammonite replied, “I will only make a deal with you if I pluck out each of your right eyes and humiliate all of Israel.”
  • 3. The authorities in Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days to send messengers throughout Israel. If no one comes to help us, we will surrender.”
  • 4. When the messengers arrived at Gibeah, Saul's city, and reported what was happening, all the people wept with a loud voice.
  • 5. At that moment, Saul was tending his cattle in the field and asked: “What is happening to the people? Why are they crying?” Then they told him what Jabesh's men had said.
  • 6. Upon hearing this, the Spirit of God came upon Saul, and he became enraged.
  • 7. He took two oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent the pieces through messengers throughout Israel, proclaiming, “This is what will happen to the cattle of those who do not follow Saul and Samuel.” Then the fear of the Lord fell upon the people, and they all came together.
  • 8. When Saul gathered them together at Bezek, there were three hundred thousand men from Israel and thirty thousand from Judah.
  • 9. He said to the messengers of Jabesh, “Say to the men of Jabesh Gilead, 'Tomorrow at noon there will be deliverance for you.'” When the inhabitants of Jabesh heard this, they were filled with joy.
  • 10. Then the men of Jabesh said to the Ammonites, “Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and you can do whatever you want with us.”
  • 11. The next day, Saul divided his soldiers into three groups; They entered the Ammonite camp before dawn and fought until noon. Those who survived dispersed in such a way that no two of them were together.

Saul confirmed as king

  • 12. Then the people said to Samuel, “Who doubted that Saul would be our king? Bring us these men, and we will kill them.”
  • 13. But Saul replied, “No one will be killed today, for the Lord has brought salvation to Israel this day.”
  • 14. Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and establish the kingdom there.”
  • 15. So all the people went to Gilgal and proclaimed Saul king in the presence of the Lord. There they offered communion sacrifices to the Lord, and Saul and all the Israelites rejoiced greatly.
