God speaks to Solomon again

  • 1. When Solomon finished building the temple of the Lord, the royal palace, and everything else he wanted to build,
  • 2. the Lord appeared to him a second time, just as he had appeared in Gibeon.
  • 3. The Lord said to Solomon, “I have heard your prayer and supplication that you have made before me. I consecrated this temple that you built, so that my name may dwell in it forever. My eyes and my heart will be on him every day.
  • 4. “But if you walk before me as your father David walked, with sincerity of heart and uprightness, doing everything I have commanded you, obeying my statutes and commandments,
  • 5. then I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever, as I promised your father David, saying: You will never lack a successor on the throne of Israel.
  • 6. “But if you or your children turn away from me, and do not follow my commandments and statutes that I have given you, and go to worship and serve other gods,
  • 7. then I will drive them away from my presence and uproot Israel from the land I gave them. This temple, which I have consecrated to my name, will be an object of mockery and contempt among all peoples.
  • 8. And although this temple is now imposing, all who pass by it will be amazed and ask, 'Why has the Lord done this to this land and this temple?'
  • 9. And the answer will be: 'Because they abandoned the Lord their God, who brought their ancestors out of Egypt, and held fast to other gods, worshiping and serving them. Therefore, the Lord brought all this misfortune upon them' “.
