Alliance with the king of Tire

  • 1. When Hiram, king of Tire, heard that Solomon had been anointed king, he sent his counselors to Solomon, for he had always been a loyal friend of David.
  • 2. Solomon sent this message to Hiram:
  • 3. “You know that because of the wars that my father David faced on all sides, he was unable to build a temple in honor of the name of the Lord his God until the Lord had put all his enemies under his feet.
  • 4. Now the Lord my God has granted me peace in all borders, and I have to face neither enemies nor calamities.
  • 5. Therefore, I intend to build a temple in honor of the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord said to my father David, 'Your son, whom I will put in your place, will build a temple in honor of my name.'
  • 6. I ask you to order the cedars of Lebanon to be cut down for me. My servants will work with yours, and I will pay your servants the wages you determine. You know that among us there is no one so skilled in cutting down trees as the Sidonians.”

The material for the temple

  • 7. Hiram was overjoyed to hear Solomon's message and exclaimed, “Blessed be the Lord, who gave David a wise son to rule this great nation.”
  • 8. And Hiram answered Solomon: “I have received your message and will grant you your request, sending you cedar and pine wood.
  • 9. My servants will take the wood from Lebanon to the sea, and I will float it on rafts to the place you tell me. There I will leave it, and you can pick it up. In return, you will provide food for my court.”
  • 10. So Hiram became the supplier of all the cedar and pine wood that Solomon wanted.
  • 11. Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand barrels of wheat as food for his court, in addition to twenty thousand barrels of pure olive oil. This was what Solomon offered Hiram annually.
  • 12. The Lord gave Solomon wisdom, as he had promised him. There was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and the two made a treaty.
  • 13. King Solomon summoned thirty thousand workers from all Israel.
  • 14. He sent them to Lebanon in groups of ten thousand each month, so that they would take turns: one month in Lebanon and two months at home. Adoniram was in charge of the work.
  • 15. Solomon had seventy thousand bearers and eighty thousand hewers of stone in the hills.
  • 16. In addition, there were three thousand three hundred foremen who supervised the work and commanded the workers.
  • 17. Following the king's orders, they removed large blocks of high-quality stone from the quarry, which would be used as hewn stone foundations for the temple.
  • 18. Solomon's builders, together with Hiram's builders and the men of Gebal, cut and prepared the wood and stones for the construction of the temple.
