Abijah's prophecy against Jeroboam

  • 1. At that time, Abijah, son of Jeroboam, fell ill.
  • 2. Then Jeroboam said to his wife, “Disguise yourself so that you will not be recognized as Jeroboam's wife, and go to Shiloh, where Ahijah the prophet is, the one who told me that I would be king over these people.
  • 3. Bring him ten loaves of bread, some cakes and a jar of honey. He will tell you what will happen to the boy.”
  • 4. Jeroboam's wife did as asked and went to Ahijah's house in Shiloh. Ahijah, however, was blind due to his old age.
  • 5. But the Lord had said to Ahijah, “Jeroboam's wife is coming to consult with you about her son, who is sick. Tell her this and that, because when she arrives, she will come in disguise.”
  • 6. As soon as Ahijah heard the woman's footsteps at the door, he exclaimed, “Come in, wife of Jeroboam! Why are you in disguise? I have been sent to you with bad news.
  • 7. Go and tell Jeroboam that this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 'I took him from among the people and made him leader over my people Israel.
  • 8. I tore the kingdom from the house of David and gave it to you, but you have not been like my servant David, who kept my commandments and followed me with all his heart, doing only what was right in my eyes.
  • 9. You have done worse than all who preceded you, and on top of all that, you have made other gods for yourself, metal idols. You provoked my wrath and turned your back on me.
  • 10. Therefore I will bring misfortune on the family of Jeroboam. I will eliminate every last man from Jeroboam, both slave and free in Israel. I will sweep up Jeroboam's family like dung until it disappears completely.
  • 11. Everyone who belongs to the family of Jeroboam and dies in the city, the dogs will eat, and the same will happen to anyone who dies in the field. The Lord has spoken!'”
  • 12. “And now, come home! When you set foot in the city, the child will die.
  • 13. All Israel will mourn for him and bury him. He is the only one from Jeroboam's family who will receive a burial, because, of Jeroboam's descendants, only he found something good before the Lord, the God of Israel.
  • 14. The Lord will raise up a king for himself over Israel who will destroy the family of Jeroboam. The day has come! What I say will be fulfilled right now.
  • 15. And the Lord will smite Israel, so that it will be shaken like a reed shaken by water. He will uproot Israel from this good land that he gave to their ancestors and scatter them beyond the Euphrates River, because they built holy poles and provoked the Lord's anger.
  • 16. He will abandon Israel because of the sins that Jeroboam committed and caused Israel to commit.”
  • 17. Jeroboam's wife got up and returned to Tirzah. As soon as he entered the city, the boy died.
  • 18. They buried him, and all Israel mourned for him, as the Lord had said through his servant the prophet Ahijah.
  • 19. The other events of Jeroboam's reign, the wars he fought, and how he ruled are recorded in the annals of the kings of Israel.
  • 20. Jeroboam reigned twenty-two years. Then he rested with his ancestors, and his son Nadab became king in his place.

Rehoboam is king of Judah

  • 21. Rehoboam, son of Solomon, was king of Judah. He was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord had chosen from all the tribes of Israel to place his name. His mother, an Ammonite, was named Naamah.
  • 22. Judah did evil in the sight of the Lord, and by their sins they provoked him more than their ancestors had done.
  • 23. They also built for themselves high places, statues of Asherah and sacred poles on every hill and under every leafy tree.
  • 24. Furthermore, there were holy prostitutes in the land. They did all the detestable practices of the nations that the Lord had driven out before the Israelites.
  • 25. In the fifth year of Rehoboam's reign, Shishak king of Egypt attacked Jerusalem.
  • 26. He took away all the treasures of the temple of the Lord and the royal palace, including the golden shields that Solomon had made.
  • 27. Instead, King Rehoboam had bronze shields made and gave them to the chief guards guarding the entrance to the royal palace.
  • 28. Every time the king went to the temple of the Lord, the guards would hold the shields and then return them to the guard room.
  • 29. The rest of the events of Rehoboam's reign and everything he did are recorded in the annals of the kings of Judah.
  • 30. There was constant war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam.
  • 31. Rehoboam rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the city of David. His mother, an Ammonite, was named Naamah. His son Abijah succeeded to the throne in his place.
