the people of jerusalem

  • 1. All Israelites were listed in the genealogies of the historical records of the kings of Israel. For their unfaithfulness, the people of Judah were taken prisoner to Babylon.
  • 2. The first to return to their properties and their cities were some of the people and some priests, Levites and temple servants.
  • 3. Those from Judah, Benjamin, and Ephraim and Manasseh who settled in Jerusalem were:
  • 4. Uthai, son of Ammihud, grandson of Omri, great-grandson of Imri, and great-great-grandson of Bani, a descendant of Perez, son of Judah.
  • 5. Of the descendants of Shelah: Asaiah the firstborn with his sons.
  • 6. Of the descendants of Zerah: Jeuel. Those of Judah were 690.
  • 7. Of the Benjamites: Salu, son of Meshullam, grandson of Hodaviah and great-grandson of Hassenua;
  • 8. Ibneias, son of Jeroam; Elah, son of Uzi, son of Michri; and Meshullam, son of Shephatiah, son of Reuel, son of Ibniah.
  • 9. Of the tribe of Benjamin, listed in their genealogy, there were 956. All these men were heads of their families.
  • 10. Of the priests: Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, Jachin;
  • 11. Azariah, son of Hilkiah, grandson of Meshullam, great-grandson of Zadok, great-grandson of Meraioth, and great-great-grandson of Ahitub, the leader in charge of the temple of God;
  • 12. Adaiah, son of Jeroam, grandson of Pashur, and great-grandson of Malchiah; and Masai, son of Adiel, grandson of Jazera, great-grandson of Meshullam, great-great-grandson of Mesilemite, and great-great-grandson of Immer.
  • 13. The number of priests who were heads of families was 1,760. They were capable men, and their responsibility was to minister in the temple of God.
  • 14. Of the Levites: Shemaiah, son of Hashub, grandson of Azrikam and great-grandson of Hashabiah, a Merarite;
  • 15. Baquebacar, Heres, Galal and Mattanias, son of Mica, grandson of Zicri and great-grandson of Asaph;
  • 16. Obadiah, son of Shemaiah, grandson of Galal, and great-grandson of Jeduthun; and Berekiah, son of Asa and grandson of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Netophathites.
  • 17. The gatekeepers were: Shallum the chief, Acub, Talmon, Ahiman and their brothers, being to this day
  • 18. the guards of the King's gate, east. Salum was the chief. These were the gatekeepers, who belonged to the Levite camp.
  • 19. Shallum, son of Korah, grandson of Ebiasaph, great-grandson of Korah, and his relatives the Korahites, were gatekeepers, responsible for guarding the entrances to the Tent, as their ancestors had been responsible for guarding the entrance to the LORD's dwelling.
  • 20. At that time Phinehas son of Eleazar was in charge of the gatekeepers, and the Lord was with him.
  • 21. Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was the gatekeeper at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
  • 22. The sum total of those chosen to be gatekeepers, recorded in the genealogies of their villages, was 212. They had been appointed to these positions of trust by David and Samuel the seer.
  • 23. They and their descendants were charged with guarding the gates of the temple of the Lord, the temple called Tent.
  • 24. Guards watched the gates on the four sides: north, south, east and west.
  • 25. Their relatives, residing in their villages, had to come from time to time and work with them for periods of seven days.
  • 26. But the four chief gatekeepers, who were Levites, were given the responsibility of taking care of the rooms and treasury of the temple of God.
  • 27. They spent the night near the temple of God, for they had the duty to watch over it and to open the doors every morning.
  • 28. Some Levites were in charge of the utensils used in worship in the temple; they counted them when they were taken out and when they were returned.
  • 29. Others were responsible for the furniture and all the other utensils of the sanctuary, as well as the flour, wine, oil, incense and spices.
  • 30. And still others took care of handling the spices.
  • 31. A Levite named Mattithiah, the eldest son of Shallum the Koreite, was in charge of baking the loaves for the offerings.
  • 32. And among the Kohathites, his brothers, some were in charge of preparing the bread that was placed on the table every Saturday.
  • 33. The singers, heads of Levite families, remained in the temple rooms and were exempt from other duties, for day and night they dedicated themselves to their own task.
  • 34. All these were heads of Levite families, listed as leaders in their genealogies, and they lived in Jerusalem.

Saul's genealogy

  • 35. Jeiel, the father of Gibeon, lived in Gibeon. His wife's name was Maacah;
  • 36. and that of his eldest son, Abdon.
  • 37. Then were born Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab,
  • 38. Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah and Myclote.
  • 39. Ner begat Kish, Kish begat Saul, Saul begat Jonathan, Malchisua, Abinadab and Esbaal.
  • 40. This was the son of Jonathan: Merib-Baal, who spawned Mica.
  • 41. These were the sons of Mica: Pitom, Melech, Tareia and Acaz.
  • 42. Ahaz spawned Jada; Jadá spawned Alemete, Azmavete and Zimri; and Zimri spawned Mosa.
  • 43. Mosa spawned Bineah, whose son was Rephaias; his son was Eleasa, father of Azel.
  • 44. Azel had six sons, and their names were: Azricam, Bocru, Ishmael, Searias, Obadiah and Hanan. These were the sons of Azel.
