Offerings for the construction of the temple

  • 1. Then King David said to the whole assembly: “God chose my son Solomon, and no one else. But he is young and inexperienced and the task is great, for the palace will not be made for men, but for the Lord, our God.
  • 2. I provided a large amount of resources for the work of the temple of my God: gold, silver, bronze, iron and wood, as well as onyx for the settings and also turquoise, stones of different colors and all kinds of precious stones and marble.
  • 3. Furthermore, for the sake of the temple of my God, I now give out of my own riches gold and silver for the temple of my God, in addition to all that I have already given for this holy temple.
  • 4. I therefore offer one hundred and five tons of pure gold from Ophir and two hundred and forty-five tons of refined silver to cover the walls of the temple,
  • 5. for work in gold and silver and for all the work of craftsmen. Now, who today is willing to offer gifts to the Lord?”
  • 6. Then the heads of the families, the leaders of the tribes of Israel, the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and the officials in charge of the king's work offered freely.
  • 7. For the work of the temple of God they gave one hundred and seventy-five tons of gold and ten thousand gold coins, three hundred and fifty tons of silver, six hundred and thirty tons of bronze and three thousand and five hundred tons of iron.
  • 8. Whoever had precious stones gave them to the storehouse of the treasures of the temple of the Lord, whose head was Jeiel the Gershonite.
  • 9. The people rejoiced at the attitude of their leaders, as they made these offerings voluntarily and with an upright heart to the Lord. And King David was also filled with joy.

David praises the Lord

  • 10. David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying: “Blessed are you, O Lord, God of Israel, our father, from everlasting to everlasting.
  • 11. Yours, O Lord, are the greatness, the power, the glory, the majesty and the splendor, for everything in the heavens and on earth is yours. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom; you are above all.
  • 12. Wealth and honor come from you; you rule over all things. In your hands are the strength and power to exalt and give strength to everyone.
  • 13. Now, our God, we give thanks to you, and praise your glorious name.
  • 14. “But who am I, and who are my people, that we could contribute as generously as we did? Everything comes from you, and we only give you what comes from your hands.
  • 15. Before you we are strangers and strangers, like our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope.
  • 16. O Lord our God, all this wealth that we offered to build a temple in honor of your holy name comes from your hands, and it all belongs to you.
  • 17. I know, O my God, that you search the heart and that you delight in integrity. Everything I gave was spontaneously and with integrity of heart. And now I have seen with joy how willingly your people, who are here, have contributed.
  • 18. O Lord, God of our ancestors Abraham, Isaac and Israel, keep this desire in the hearts of your people forever and keep their hearts loyal to you.
  • 19. And give my son Solomon an upright heart to obey your commandments, your precepts and your decrees, in order to build this temple for which I have made the necessary preparations.”
  • 20. Then David said to the whole assembly, “Praise the Lord your God.” And they all praised the Lord, the God of their ancestors, bowing down and prostrating themselves before the Lord and before the king.

Solomon recognized as king

  • 21. The next day they sacrificed to the Lord and presented burnt offerings to him: a thousand bulls, a thousand rams and a thousand lambs, accompanied by offerings, and many other sacrifices, in favor of all Israel.
  • 22. That day they ate and drank with great joy in the presence of the Lord. So for the second time they proclaimed Solomon, the son of David, king, anointing him before the Lord as sovereign, and Zadok as priest.
  • 23. So Solomon sat as king on the throne of the Lord in place of David his father. He prospered, and all Israel obeyed him.
  • 24. All the leaders and chief warriors, as well as all the sons of King David, pledged submission to King Solomon.
  • 25. The Lord highly exalted Solomon in all Israel and gave him such splendor in his reign as no king of Israel had ever had.

David's death

  • 26. David son of Jesse reigned over all Israel.
  • 27. He reigned forty years in Israel: seven years in Hebron and thirty-three in Jerusalem.
  • 28. He died at a good old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth and honor. His son Solomon was his successor.
  • 29. The deeds of King David, from the beginning to the end of his reign, are written in the historical records of the seer Samuel, the prophet Nathan and the seer Gad,
  • 30. including the details of his reign and power and the events connected with him, with Israel and with the kingdoms of the other lands.
