Plans for building the temple

  • 1. David gathered in Jerusalem all the leaders of Israel: the leaders of the tribes, the leaders of the divisions in the king's service, the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and the leaders in charge of all the goods and flocks that belonged to the king and the his sons, along with the palace officials, the chief warriors, and all the valiant soldiers.
  • 2. King David stood up and said, “Listen to me, my brothers and my people. I had in my heart the purpose of building a temple to place in it the ark of the covenant of the Lord, the footstool of our God; I made plans to build it,
  • 3. But God said to me, 'You will not build a temple in honor of my name, because you are a warrior and have killed many people.'
  • 4. “Yet the Lord, the God of Israel, chose me from among all my family to be king over Israel forever. He chose Judah as leader, and from the tribe of Judah he chose my family, and among my father's sons he wanted to make me king over all Israel.
  • 5. And out of all the many sons he gave me, he chose Solomon to sit on the throne of Israel, the kingdom of the Lord.
  • 6. He said to me, 'Your son Solomon is the one who will build my temple and my courtyards, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.
  • 7. I will establish his kingdom forever if he continues to obey my commandments and my ordinances, as he does now.'
  • 8. “Therefore I now declare to you before all Israel and the assembly of the Lord and before the hearing of our God: Be careful to obey all the commandments of the Lord your God, so that you may keep possession of this good land and give it as an inheritance to your descendants forever.
  • 9. “And you, my son Solomon, recognize the God of your father, and serve him wholeheartedly and willingly, for the Lord searches all hearts and knows the motives of thoughts. If you seek him, you will find him, but if you abandon him, he will reject you forever.
  • 10. See that the Lord chose you to build a temple to serve as a sanctuary. Be strong and get to work!”
  • 11. Then David gave his son Solomon the plan of the porch of the temple, of its buildings, of its storerooms, of the upper floors and its rooms, and of the place of the mercy seat.
  • 12. He also gave him the blueprints of everything that the Spirit had placed in his heart concerning the courts of the temple of the Lord and all the rooms around it, concerning the storehouses of the treasures of the temple of God and the storehouses of the sacred gifts.
  • 13. He gave him instructions about the divisions of the priests and the Levites and about the execution of all the tasks in the temple of the Lord and the utensils that would be used.
  • 14. He determined the weight of the gold for all the gold utensils and the weight of the silver for all the silver utensils, which would be used in the different tasks:
  • 15. the weight of gold for each lampstand and its lamps; and the weight of silver for every silver lampstand and its lamps, according to the purpose of each;
  • 16. the weight of gold for each table of consecrated bread; the weight of silver for the silver tables;
  • 17. the weight of pure gold for the forks, for the sprinkling bowls, and for the pitchers; the weight of gold for each bowl of gold; the weight of silver for each silver bowl;
  • 18. and the weight of refined gold for the altar of incense. He also gave him the drawing of the chariot of golden cherubim that, with their wings outstretched, shelter the ark of the Lord's covenant.
  • 19. David said to Solomon: “The hand of the Lord gave me all this in writing, and he gave me understanding to carry out all these plans.”
  • 20. And he added: “Be strong and courageous! Get to work! Do not be afraid or discouraged, for God, the Lord, my God, is with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you until all the construction of the temple of the Lord is completed.
  • 21. The divisions of the priests and the Levites are defined for all the tasks that will be carried out in the temple of God, and you will receive help from men skilled in every type of service. The leaders and all the people will obey all your orders.”
