The divisions of the priests

  • 1. Aaron's descendants were organized as follows: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar were the sons of Aaron.
  • 2. However, Nadab and Abihu died before their father and had no children; only Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests.
  • 3. With the help of Zadok, a descendant of Eleazar, and Ahimelech, a descendant of Ithamar, David divided them into groups so that they could fulfill their responsibilities.
  • 4. There were a greater number of heads of families among the descendants of Eleazar than among those of Ithamar, and therefore they were divided as follows: sixteen heads of families among the descendants of Eleazar and eight among the descendants of Itamar.
  • 5. The division was made impartially by lot, as there were leaders of the sanctuary and leaders of God among both the descendants of Eleazar and those of Ithamar.
  • 6. The scribe Shemaiah, son of the Levite Nathanael, recorded their names in the presence of the king, the leaders, the priests Zadok and Ahimelech son of Abiathar, and the heads of the families of the priests and the Levites. The families of Eleazar and Itamar were drawn alternately.
  • 7. The first lot fell to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah,
  • 8. the third for Harim, the fourth for Sheorim,
  • 9. the fifth for Malchiah, the sixth for Miamim,
  • 10. the seventh to Hacoz, the eighth to Abijah,
  • 11. the ninth for Jeshua, the tenth for Shecaniah,
  • 12. the eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jachin,
  • 13. the thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab,
  • 14. the fifteenth to Bilga, the sixteenth to Imer,
  • 15. the seventeenth to Hezir, the eighteenth to Hapises,
  • 16. the nineteenth to Petaiah, the twentieth to Jeezkel,
  • 17. the twenty-first to Jachin, the twenty-second to Gamul,
  • 18. the twenty-third to Delaiah, and the twenty-fourth to Maaziah.
  • 19. According to this order, they were to minister when they entered the temple of the Lord, according to the prescriptions left by Aaron, their ancestor, as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded.

The remaining Levites

  • 20. These were the leaders of the other Levites: of the descendants of Amram: Subael; of the descendants of Subael: Jedias.
  • 21. As for Rehabiah, Issiah was the head of his sons.
  • 22. Of the descendants of Isar: Shelomoth; of the sons of Shelomoth: Jahath.
  • 23. Of the descendants of Hebron: Jeriah, the first; Amarias, the second; Jahaziel, the third; and Jecameão, the fourth.
  • 24. Of the descendants of Uzziel: Micah; of the sons of Micah: Samir.
  • 25. Of the descendants of Issiah, brother of Micah, Zechariah.
  • 26. Of the sons of Merari: Mali and Musi. Of the sons of Jaaziah: Benon.
  • 27. The descendants of Merari, through Jaaziah: Beno, Soão, Zaccur and Ibri.
  • 28. From Mali: Eleazar, who had no children.
  • 29. From Kish: Jerameel.
  • 30. And these were the sons of Musi: Mali, Eder and Jeremoth. These were the Levites, according to their families.
  • 31. They also cast lots in the presence of King David, Zadok, Ahimelech, and the heads of the families of the priests and the Levites, as well as their brothers, the descendants of Aaron. The families of the older brothers were treated in the same way as those of the youngest.
