Temple preparations

  • 1. Then David said, “This is the appointed place for the temple of the Lord, the God of Israel, and for the altar of burnt offerings to be offered by Israel.”
  • 2. David summoned foreigners who lived in Israel and appointed stone cutters to prepare hewn stones for the construction of the temple of God.
  • 3. He provided a large quantity of iron for the manufacture of nails and hinges for the doors, and also of bronze in countless quantities.
  • 4. Furthermore, David brought an immense quantity of cedar, brought by the Sidonians and Tyrians, for they had brought a great quantity of cedar to David.
  • 5. David thought: “My son Solomon is still young and inexperienced, but the temple that will be built for the Lord must be magnificent, famous and full of splendor before all the nations. Therefore, I will leave everything ready for construction.” And so, David made all the preparations before his death.
  • 6. David called his son Solomon and gave him instructions to build a temple for the Lord, the God of Israel.
  • 7. He said: “My son, I wanted to build a temple in honor of the name of the Lord my God.
  • 8. But the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 'You have shed much blood and fought many wars. Therefore you will not build a temple in honor of my name, for you have shed blood before me on the earth.
  • 9. However, you will have a son who will be a man of peace, and I will give him peace and rest from all his enemies around him. His name will be Solomon, and during his reign, I will bring peace and tranquility to Israel.
  • 10. He will build a temple in honor of my name. I will be a father to him, and he will be my son. And I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.'
  • 11. “Now, my son, may the Lord be with you and bless you to build the temple of the Lord your God, as he promised you.
  • 12. May the Lord grant you wisdom and understanding, so that you may obey the law of the Lord your God and fulfill all his commandments as you rule Israel.
  • 13. If you strive to obey the decrees and commandments that the Lord gave to Israel through Moses, you will be successful. Be strong and brave! Don't be afraid or discouraged!
  • 14. “With great effort I prepared for the temple of the Lord three thousand five hundred talents of gold, seven thousand talents of silver, an uncountable quantity of bronze and iron, as well as wood and stone. You can still add more materials.
  • 15. You have many workers, including bricklayers, carpenters and artisans specializing in all types of work,
  • 16. in gold, silver, bronze and iron. Now get to work, and may the Lord be with you.”
  • 17. Then David ordered all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon.
  • 18. He said, “The Lord your God is with you and has given you peace throughout your borders. For he delivered the inhabitants of this land into my hand, and the land was subdued before the Lord and his people.
  • 19. Therefore, consecrate yourselves to the Lord and to his service, and begin the construction of the sanctuary of God, so that you can bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord and the holy utensils into the temple that will be built in honor of the name of the Lord ”.
