The ark returns to Jerusalem

  • 1. After David built houses for himself in the City of David, he prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it.
  • 2. David said: “Only the Levites should carry the ark of God, for the Lord chose them to serve Him permanently.”
  • 3. David gathered all Israel together in Jerusalem to bring the ark of the Lord to the place he had prepared.
  • 4. He summoned the descendants of Aaron and the Levites:
  • 5. of the descendants of Kohath, Uriel, the chief, with 120 men;
  • 6. of the descendants of Merari, Asaiah the leader, with 220 men;
  • 7. of the descendants of Gershon, Joel, the leader, with 130 men;
  • 8. of the descendants of Elishaphan, Shemaiah, the leader, with 200 men;
  • 9. of the descendants of Hebron, Eliel, the leader, with 80 men;
  • 10. of the descendants of Uziel, Amminadab, the leader, with 112 men.
  • 11. David called the priests Zadok and Abiathar, and the Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel and Amminadab,
  • 12. and said to them, “You are the heads of the Levite families. You and your Levite relatives must consecrate yourselves to bring the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared.
  • 13. Since you did not bring it the first time, the Lord our God has punished us with a plague. Because we didn’t consult him on how to transport it correctly.”
  • 14. The priests and the Levites consecrated themselves to carry the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel.
  • 15. The Levites carried the ark of God with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded, according to the word of the Lord.
  • 16. David also instructed the leaders of the Levites to appoint some of their fellow Levites as singers, to play musical instruments, lyres, harps, and cymbals, and to rejoice with music.
  • 17. The Levites chose Heman, son of Joel; and of the descendants of Merari, Ethan the son of Chuzai;
  • 18 and among his Levite relatives, in the second rank, Zechariah, Jahaziel, Shemiramoth, Jeiel, Uni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Elipheleus, Micneiah, Obed-edom and Jeiel, the gatekeepers.
  • 19. Heman, Asaph and Ethan, the musicians, played the bronze cymbals.
  • 20. Zacharias, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jeiel, Uni, Eliab, Maaseiah and Benaiah played lyres according to the soprano.
  • 21. Mattithiah, Elipheleus, Mykneiah, Obed-edom, Jeiel and Azaziah played harps in octave, keeping time.
  • 22. Kenaniah, chief of the Levites, was in charge of singing, as he was skilled in this area.
  • 23. Berekiah and Elkanah were doorkeepers and guarded the ark.
  • 24. The priests Shebaniah, Jehoshaphat, Nathanael, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah and Eliezer blew trumpets before the ark of God. Obed-Edom and Jeiel were gatekeepers and guarded the ark.
  • 25. So David and the leaders of Israel and the commanders of thousands went to bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord, which was in the house of Obed-Edom, with joy.
  • 26. With God's help, the Levites who carried the ark of the Lord's covenant sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams.
  • 27. David was dressed in a robe of fine linen, and all the Levites who carried the ark and the musicians, including Chenaniah, the leader of the musicians, were dressed in fine linen. David also wore a linen ephod.
  • 28. All Israel accompanied the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouts of joy, with the sound of trumpets, trumpets and cymbals, playing lyres and harps.
  • 29. When the ark of the covenant of the Lord entered the City of David, Michal, Saul's daughter, watched through the window. Seeing King David dancing and celebrating, she despised him in her heart.
