David is made king over Israel

  • 1. All Israel gathered together with David in Hebron and said, “We are your blood relatives.
  • 2. In the past, when Saul was still king, you were the one who led Israel in battle. And the Lord your God said to you, 'You will shepherd my people Israel and be their leader.'”

David conquers Jerusalem

  • 3. So all the leaders of Israel came to David in Hebron, and there they made a covenant with him before the Lord. They anointed David king of Israel, as the Lord had spoken through Samuel.
  • 4. David and all Israel marched to Jerusalem, which is Jebus. The Jebusites, inhabitants of the land,
  • 5. They said to David, “You will not come in here.” But David conquered the stronghold of Zion, the city of David.
  • 6. David had said: “The first to attack the Jebusites will be the leader of the army.” Joab, son of Zeruiah, was the first to attack, and thus became the head of the army.
  • 7. David took up residence in the fortress; That's why it is called the City of David.
  • 8. He rebuilt the city, starting from the embankment that runs from Milo to the wall outside.
  • 9. David became more and more powerful, because the Lord of hosts was with him.

David's mighty men

  • 10. These were the leaders of the warriors who helped David in his government, joining him with all Israel, to make him king, as the Lord had promised:
  • 11. Jashobeam, a Hacmonite, leader of the Thirty; it was he who brandished his spear against three hundred, killing them in one fell swoop.
  • 12. After him, Eleazar, son of Dodo the Ahohite, one of the Three Valiant Ones.
  • 13. He was with David in Pas-Damim, where the Philistines had gathered for battle. There was a part of the field there full of barley, and the people were fleeing from the Philistines.
  • 14. But they stood in that part of the field, defended it, and killed the Philistines. And the Lord granted them a great victory.
  • 15. Once, during the harvest of the crop, three of the Thirty went down to David in the cave of Adullam, while a detachment of the Philistines was camped in the valley of the Rephaim.
  • 16. At that time David was in the fortress, and the Philistines had an outpost in Bethlehem.
  • 17. David expressed a desire: “I wish I could drink water from the well that is at the gate of Bethlehem!”
  • 18. Then those three broke through the Philistine camp, drew water from the well that was at the gate of Bethlehem, and brought it to David. But David refused to drink; Instead, he poured it out as an offering to the Lord,
  • 19. saying: “Far be it from me, O my God, to do this! It’s as if I were drinking the blood of these men who risked their lives!” And so David didn't want to drink. These were the feats performed by the three brave men.
  • 20. Abishai, Joab's brother, was the leader of the Thirty. With a spear he killed three hundred men and became famous among the Thirty.
  • 21. Among the Thirty he was the most honored and became their leader, but he still did not equal the first three.
  • 22. Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, was a mighty man from Kabzeel, who did great deeds. He killed the two sons of Ariel, of Moab, and in a cave he killed a lion, in a time of snow.
  • 23. He killed an Egyptian, a man of impressive stature. The Egyptian wielded a spear like a weaver, but Benaiah descended on him with a staff, snatched the spear from his hand and killed him with his own spear.
  • 24. These things were done by Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and he also became famous among the Thirty Valiant.
  • 25. He was more honorable than the Thirty, but he was not equal to the first three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard.
  • 26. The other warriors were: Asahel, Joab's brother; Elanã, son of Dodô, of Bethlehem;
  • 27. Samoth of Haror; Helles, of Pelom;
  • 28. Ira, son of Iques, of Tekoa; Abiezer, from Anathoth;
  • 29. Shibecai, from Husah; Ilai, from Aoí;
  • 30. Maaraí, from Netofa; Heled, son of Baanah, of Netofah;
  • 31. Ittai, the son of Ribai, of Gibeah of the Benjamites; Benaia, from Piraton;
  • 32. Huraí, from the rivers of Gaás; Abiel, of Arbate;
