Jehu is anointed king of Israel

  • 1. Meanwhile, the prophet Elisha called one of the prophets' disciples and said to him, “Put the cloak around your waist, take this flask of oil, and go to Ramoth Gilead.
  • 2. When you get there, look for Jehu, son of Jehoshaphat and grandson of Nimshi. Take him to a private room, away from his companions.
  • 3. Then take the flask of oil, pour it on his head and declare, 'This is what the Lord says: I am anointing you as king over Israel.' Then, open the door and escape without delay!”
  • 4. The young prophet went to Ramoth Gilead.
  • 5. When he got there, he found the army commanders gathered together and said, “I have a message for you, commander.” “Which one of us?” asked Jehu. He replied: “For you, commander.”
  • 6. Jehu got up and entered the house. Then the young prophet poured the oil on Jehu's head and said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 'I am anointing you as king over Israel, the Lord's people.
  • 7. You will exterminate the family of Ahab, your master, and in this way I will avenge the blood of my servants the prophets and the blood of all the servants of the Lord, shed by Jezebel.
  • 8. Ahab's entire family will be eliminated. I will destroy all the men of your family in Israel, both slave and free.
  • 9. I will treat the family of Ahab as I treated the family of Jeroboam son of Nebat and the family of Baasha son of Ahijah.
  • 10. And Jezebel will be eaten by dogs in the territory of Jezreel, and no one will bury her' “. Then he opened the door and ran out.
  • 11. When Jehu returned to the king's other officials, one of them asked him, “Is everything all right? What did this madman want with you?” Jehu replied, “You know these people and you know what they say.”
  • 12. But they insisted: “Hide nothing from us! Tell us what he said.” Then Jehu said, “He said to me, 'This is what the Lord says: I am anointing you as king over Israel.'”
  • 13. Immediately they took their cloaks and spread them before him on the steps. Then they blew the trumpet and shouted, “Jehu is king!”

Jehu kills Joram and Ahaziah

  • 14. So Jehu, son of Jehoshaphat and grandson of Nimshi, began a conspiracy against King Joram while he defended Ramoth Gilead with all Israel against Hazael, king of Syria.
  • 15. King Joram had returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds he received in battle against Hazael, king of Syria. Jehu said, “If you are with me, no one should flee the city to Jezreel to tell the news.”
  • 16. Then Jehu got into his chariot and went to Jezreel, where Joram was recovering. Ahaziah, king of Judah, had come to visit him.
  • 17. When the sentry at the tower of Jezreel saw Jehu's troops approaching, he shouted, “I see a troop coming!” Joram ordered: “Take a knight and send him to meet them and ask if they come in peace.”
  • 18. The knight went to Jehu and said, “The king asks, 'Do you come in peace?' ” Jehu replied, “Don’t come and talk about peace. Get out of my way". The sentry reported: “The messenger has reached them, but he is not returning.”
  • 19. Then the king sent a second knight. When he came to them, he said, “The king asks, 'Do you come in peace?' ” Jehu replied, “Don’t come and talk about peace. Get out of my way".
  • 20. The sentry reported: “He has reached them, but he is not coming back either.” And he added: “The way the leader of the troop leads is like that of Jehu, grandson of Ninsi. He drives like crazy.”
  • 21. Joram ordered them to prepare their chariot. As soon as it was ready, Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah went out, each in his chariot, to meet Jehu. They found him on the property of Naboth of Jezreel.
  • 22. When Joram saw Jehu, he asked, “Do you come in peace, Jehu?” Jehu replied: “How can there be peace while the idolatries and sorceries of your mother Jezebel continue?”
  • 23. Joram turned the reins of his chariot and fled, shouting to Ahaziah, “Treason, Ahaziah!”
  • 24. Then Jehu drew his bow with all his might and struck Joram in the back. The arrow went through his heart, and he fell dead.
  • 25. Jehu said to Bidkar his officer, “Take the body and throw it at Naboth’s estate in Jezreel. Remember what the Lord said to Ahab, Joram's father, when we were together in his chariot. The Lord said:
  • 26. 'Yesterday I saw the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons,' declares the Lord, 'and I will surely make you pay for it on this very property,' declares the Lord. Now take the body and throw it on the property, according to the word of the Lord.”
  • 27. When Ahaziah king of Judah saw this, he fled toward Beth-hagan. But Jehu pursued him and shouted, “Kill him too!” And they smote him in his chariot on the way up to Gur, near Ibleam. Ahaziah managed to flee to Megiddo, where he died.
  • 28. His servants took him to Jerusalem and buried him with his ancestors in their tomb in the City of David.
  • 29. Ahaziah became king of Judah in the eleventh year of Joram son of Ahab.

Jezebel's death

  • 30. After this, Jehu entered Jezreel. When Jezebel heard this, she painted her eyes, fixed her hair, and looked out the palace window.
  • 31. When Jehu entered the gate, she cried out, “How are you, Zimri, your master’s murderer?”
  • 32. Jehu looked up and shouted, “Who is on my side?” Two or three officers looked at him.
  • 33. Then Jehu ordered, “Throw this woman down!” They threw her, and her blood splashed on the wall and the horses. Jehu ran her over.
  • 34. Jehu went in and ate and drank. Then he said: “Take this damned woman and bury her, after all, she was the daughter of a king.”
  • 35. But when they went to bury her, they only found her skull, feet and hands.
  • 36. Then they returned and told Jehu, who said: “The word of the Lord, which was spoken through his servant Elijah the Tishbite, has come true: 'In the land of Jezreel, dogs will devour the flesh of Jezebel.
  • 37. Her remains will be scattered on the land of Jezreel, like dung in the field, so that no one will be able to say, 'This is Jezebel.'”
