Duties of Priests and Levites

  • 1. And the LORD said unto Aaron, You and your sons, and your father's house with you, shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary; and you and your sons with you will bear the iniquity of your priesthood.
  • 2. And you shall also bring with you your brothers, the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father, that they may come together with you and serve you; but you and your sons with you shall serve before the tabernacle of testimony.
  • 3. And they will keep what you command, and the service of the entire tent; only they will not approach the utensils of the sanctuary and the altar, lest they die, just like you.
  • 4. And they shall be gathered unto thee, and shall keep the tabernacle of the congregation in all things concerning the tent; but the stranger will not come near you.
  • 5. And you shall guard the sanctuary and the altar, so that there will be no more wrath upon the children of Israel.
  • 6. Behold, I have taken your brethren the Levites from among the children of Israel; They are given to you as a gift to the LORD, to serve you in the work of the tent of meeting.
  • 7. But you and your sons with you shall keep your priesthood in everything that concerns the altar and within the veil; so shall ye serve; I have given you the service of your priesthood as a gift; and the stranger who approaches will die.

Offerings for the priests and Levites

  • 8. And the LORD said unto Aaron, Behold, I have given thee the remainder of my heave-offerings, with all the holy things of the children of Israel; as a gift it is yours and your children's forever, because of the anointing.
  • 9. This shall be yours of the most holy, of the burnt offerings, and of the sin offering, and of the trespass offering; because it is most holy to you and to your children.
  • 10. You shall eat it in the most holy place; every man will eat it; it will be holy to you.
  • 11. This also shall be yours: the heave offering of their gifts, with all the wave offerings of the children of Israel; to you, and to your sons, and to your daughters with you, by a statute for ever; everyone who is clean in your house will eat it.
  • 12. All the best of the oil, and all the best of the new wine and the grain, the firstfruits of them that they give to the LORD, I have given to you.
  • 13. The firstfruits of everything in their land that they bring to the LORD will be yours; everyone who is clean in your house will eat them.
  • 14. Everything dedicated in Israel will be yours.
  • 15. Everything that you open to the womb, of all flesh, which you offer to the LORD, both man and beast, will be yours; but thou shalt redeem the firstborn of men, and thou shalt redeem the firstborn of unclean beasts.
  • 16. And his ransom shall be, from the age of one month, according to thy estimation, for five shekels of money, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, which is twenty geras.
  • 17. But you shall not redeem the firstborn of the cow, or the firstborn of the sheep, or the firstborn of the goat; saints are; its blood you shall sprinkle on the altar, and its fat you shall burn; This is a sweet-smelling offering made by fire to the LORD.
  • 18. And his flesh will be yours; as the breast of the wave offering, and as the right shoulder shall be yours.
  • 19. All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer to the LORD, I have given to you, and to your sons and your daughters with you, by a statute for ever; an everlasting covenant of salt before the LORD is for you and your descendants with you.
  • 20. And the LORD said unto Aaron, Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, nor any part among them; I am your portion and your inheritance among the children of Israel.
  • 21. And behold, to the children of Levi I have given all the tithes in Israel for an inheritance, for the service they render, the service of the tent of the congregation.
  • 22. So the children of Israel will no longer approach the tabernacle of the congregation, lest they bear their sins and die.
  • 23. But the Levites will do the service of the tent of meeting, and they will bear their iniquity; perpetual statute is for your generations; and among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.
  • 24. For the tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer to the LORD as a heave offering, I have given to the Levites as an inheritance; for I said unto them, Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.
  • 25. And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying:
  • 26. You shall also speak to the Levites and say to them: When you receive from the children of Israel the tithes that I have given you from them for your inheritance, you shall offer a heave offering of them to the LORD, the tithes of the tithes.
  • 27. And this offering of yours shall be counted unto you as the grain of the threshing floor, and as the produce of the wine press.
  • 28. In the same way ye shall offer a heave offering unto the LORD out of all your tithes, which ye receive of the children of Israel; and ye shall give of it the heave offering of the LORD unto Aaron the priest.
  • 29. Of all your gifts you shall offer the entire heave offering of the LORD; of all their best, their holy part.
  • 30. Therefore you shall say to them: When you offer the best of them, then it will be considered to the Levites as the produce of the threshing floor and as the produce of the wine press.
  • 31. And you shall eat it in every place, you and your families, for your reward is for your service in the tent of meeting.
  • 32. So you will not bear sin when you offer the best of them; and you shall not profane the holy things of the children of Israel, lest you die.
