The incense altar

  • 1. You will also make an altar to burn incense; of acacia wood you will make it.
  • 2. It will be a cubit long and a cubit wide; it will be square, and two cubits high; their horns shall be of the same piece.
  • 3. And thou shalt cover it with pure gold; its top, and its walls round about, and its horns; and you will make a golden crown around it.
  • 4. You shall also make two gold rings for him under his crown; at the two corners of it, on both sides you will make it; and they will be places for the poles with which they will carry him.
  • 5. And you shall make the staves of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold.
  • 6. And you shall place them before the veil that is by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat, which is over the testimony, where I will meet with you.
  • 7. And Aaron shall burn on it the incense of fragrant spices; every morning when he lists the lamps, he will burn them.
  • 8. Also when he lights the lamps in the evening, he will burn it; he shall burn perpetual incense before the LORD throughout your generations.
  • 9. You shall not offer burnt sacrifices or food offerings on this altar, nor pour a drink offering on it.
  • 10. And Aaron shall make atonement upon its horns once in the year, with the blood of the sin sacrifice of atonement; once in the year he will make atonement for him throughout your generations; Most holy is it to the LORD.

The ransom money

  • 11. And the LORD said to Moses, saying:
  • 12. When you take the census of the children of Israel, according to their number, then they will give each one a ransom of his soul to the LORD when you count them; so that there will be no death among them when you count them.
  • 13. This will give everyone who is numbered; half a shekel, according to the shekel of the sanctuary; for twenty geras the shekel shall be; half a shekel will be the offering to the LORD.
  • 14. Everyone who is numbered, from twenty years old and upward, will give the offering to the LORD.
  • 15. The rich will not give more, and the poor will not give less than half a shekel, when they give the offering to the LORD, to make atonement for their souls.
  • 16. And thou shalt take the atonement money of the children of Israel, and give it for the service of the tent of the congregation, that it may be a memorial unto the children of Israel before the LORD, to make atonement for their souls.

The basin for washing

  • 17. And the LORD said unto Moses, saying,
  • 18. You shall also make a laver of copper, with its base of copper, for washing; and you shall put it between the tent of meeting and the altar, and you shall put water in it.
  • 19. And Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet in it.
  • 20. When they enter the tent of meeting, they must wash themselves with water, so that they do not die; or when they come to the altar to minister, to light the offering made by fire to the LORD;
  • 21. They will therefore wash their hands and their feet, so that they do not die; and this shall be a statute for ever, to him and to his descendants throughout their generations.

The anointing oil

  • 22. The LORD also said to Moses, saying:
  • 23. You therefore take for yourself of the chief spices, of the purest myrrh five hundred shekels, and of fragrant cinnamon half as much, two hundred and fifty shekels, and of fragrant calamus two hundred and fifty shekels,
  • 24. and of cassia five hundred shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and of olive oil one hin.
  • 25. And you shall make of this the oil of the holy anointing, a composition composed according to the work of the perfumer; Holy anointing oil will be.
  • 26. And with it thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation, and the ark of the testimony,
  • 8. and the table with its utensils, and the pure candlestick with all its utensils, and the altar of incense,
  • 9. and the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the laver with its base,
  • 29. Thus thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy; everything that touches them will be holy.
  • 30. You shall also anoint Aaron and his sons, and sanctify them to minister to me in the priesthood.
  • 31. And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, This shall be my holy anointing oil throughout your generations.
  • 32. It shall not be prepared for a man like it, nor shall you make another like it according to its composition; holy he is, and will be holy to you.
  • 33. Any man who makes another like it, or who puts some of his ointment on another, will be cut off from his people.

The preparation of incense

  • 34. And the LORD said unto Moses, Take unto thee spices, storax, and onyka, and gallium; these spices, and pure incense, in equal proportion.
  • 35. And from this you will make incense, a perfume according to the art of the perfumer, seasoned, pure and holy;
  • 36. and thou shalt grind it very finely, and put it before the testimony, in the tent of the congregation, where I will come unto thee; It will be a most holy thing for you.
  • 37. But the incense which you shall make according to this composition, you shall not make for yourselves; He will be holy to you in the LORD.
  • 38. Whoever makes like him, to smell him, will be cut off from his people.
