The wine chef and the baker

  • 1. After some time, the cupbearer of the king of Egypt and the royal baker offended their master, the king of Egypt.
  • 2. Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker,
  • 3. and ordered them to be thrown into the prison of the captain of the guard, in the same place where Joseph was imprisoned.
  • 4. The captain of the guard commissioned Joseph to attend to them, and he became responsible for them. After some time in prison,
  • 5. Both the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were detained in prison, had dreams on the same night. Each dream had its own interpretation.
  • 6. When Joseph went to see them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected.
  • 7. He asked Pharaoh's officers who were with him in prison, saying, “Why do you look so downcast today?”
  • 8. They replied, “We have had dreams, but there is no one to interpret them.” Joseph said to them, “Are not interpretations from God? Tell me your dreams.”
  • 9. Then the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream: “In a certain dream I saw a vine before me.
  • 10. There were three branches in it. As it sprouted, the vine began to blossom, and its bunches of grapes ripened into ripe grapes.
  • 11. Pharaoh's cup was in my hand; I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup and gave him the cup to drink.”
  • 12. Joseph said to him, “This is the interpretation: the three branches are three days.
  • 13. Within three days Pharaoh will restore you to your position, and you will give him the cup, as you used to do before when you were his cupbearer.
  • 14. But remember me, when it is well with you, and be kind to me; mention me to Pharaoh so that he can take me out of this prison.
  • 15. I was stolen from the land of the Hebrews, and here too I did nothing to cause them to put me in prison.”
  • 16. When the chief baker saw that Joseph had given a favorable interpretation, he said to him: “I also had a dream: Three baskets of white bread were on my head.
  • 17. In the highest basket there was a great variety of bread of all kinds for Pharaoh, but the birds ate them from the basket that was on my head.”
  • 18. Joseph said to him, “This is the interpretation: the three baskets are three days.
  • 19. Within three days Pharaoh will take his head and hang him on a tree. The birds will eat your flesh.”
  • 20. On the third day, which was Pharaoh's birth anniversary, he gave a banquet to all his officials. And he restored the chief butler to his office,
  • 21. so that he could put the cup into Pharaoh's hands again,
  • 22. but he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted.
  • 23. However, the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph; forgot about him.
